Dubs Stars in Glenalbyn

Dubs Stars in Glenalbyn

A great day for Dublin Hurling and Football - and for Kilmacud Crokes. The weather looked a little grey but certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the players, fans and the volunteers.

Páirc de Búrca and Glenalbyn were gleaming and a huge volunteer effort by Kilmacud Crokes members meant we were well prepared to welcome the Dublin Senior Hurlers and Footballers, the Dublin Bus/Herald Dubs Stars, together with many fans to the home of hurling and football in South County Dublin. Thanks to all those who made this event such a wonderful success.

First up were the hurlers, with Dublin fresh from their Walsh Cup victory over Wexford in Croke Park on Saturday. Despite a late rally by the Dubs Stars Dublin managed to hold on for a four point victory. There was a fair sprinkling of Crokes players on both teams, including Ross O Carroll, Cian MacGabhann, Seanie McGrath, Barry Mulligan, Ronan Walsh, Mark McCallion, Tadhg Murphy, Rob Murphy, Lorcan McMullan and Jack Doughan. The final score was 2-24  5-11. Click HERE for photos of the hurling.

Afterwards the footballers treated the large attendance to another great display, where the Stars enjoyed a deserved 0-11 to 1-6 interval lead. The contest remained similarly tight upon the resumption as Dublin, captained from centre-back by Philly McMahon, momentarily took the lead through a clinical finish by Conor McGuire in the 43rd minute.

However, the Dubs Stars showed wonderful reserves of energy and commitment to maintain their challenge as substitute Chris Galvin popped over a brace of fine points. Nathan Mullins gained reward for a tireless effort with a late point for the Dubs Stars but a free from Cormac Costello and Walsh's third of the afternoon at the death ensured an equitable conclusion to events. An injury-time point from Niall Walsh earned Dublin a deserved draw against the Dubs Stars in their annual Dublin Bus/Herald football challenge match yesterday in Glenalbyn. The final score was Stars 1-17, Dublin 2-14. Many Kilmacud players featured on both teams - Ross Mc Gowan, Eoin Culligan, David Campbell, Craig Dias and David Nestor. The Dubs Stars team were well mentored by clubmen Martin Mc Dermott and Dr. Pat Duggan.
