Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Educational Bursary

The proceeds of the Punchestown Corporate Race Day have been invaluable to the hurling section over the years and the recently completed Hurling Wall and Arena in Pairc de Burca is a physical embodiment of the way in which those proceeds have been invested to develop hurling in Kilmacud Crokes.

GradsThis year, on foot of an initiative proposed by a Kilmacud Crokes stalwart, Mr Sean Allen, to invest in our other type of infrastructure, our young players themselves; the Hurling Committee have ring fenced a bursary of €1000 as a contribution to tuition fees for an eligible candidate.

An eligible candidate will be a current Kilmacud Crokes team hurler who is commencing third level education for the first time in September 2012.

We are especially pleased to announce that this initiative has been matched by a generous donation from United Drug, to allow for another, second bursary of €1000 to also be awarded.

Expressions of interest are now being invited from eligible Kilmacud Crokes Hurlers who should contact Denis Egan, denis@prospero.ie stating the following;

  •        Name
  •        Address
  •        Hurling Team
  •        Name of Course
  •        Name of College
  •        Anticipated Date of Commencement

All expressions must be received by 5pm on 7th September 2012.

Late entries will not be accepted.

All expressions received will be entered into a lottery style draw and 2 winners will be randomly drawn at a meeting of the Hurling Committee on the 11th September 2012

In difficult financial times, the hurling section want to give something back to the community which supports the club, and these bursaries will help two of our young sportsmen, while stressing the importance of continuing education to our young people.  The hurling section hopes to make this an annual event.

Comments on the Educational Bursary

"It is heartening to see a sporting organisation consider a holistic view of the young people who participate in sport.  Continuing in both sport and third level education produces rounded individuals who are mentally and physically fit.  I would like to congratulate the Hurling Section of Kilmacud Crokes in their commitment to supporting third level education for their sportsmen and hope that it will be an ongoing initiative."

Ruairi Quinn TD, Minister for Education and Skills

“I am very pleased to see Kilmacud Crokes Hurling encouraging the further education of young players and would like to congratulate them on this educational bursary. Sport and education go hand in hand in enriching the lives of our young people.”

Dr Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport

“Students struggle to meet tuition fees and this wonderful gesture by Kilmacud Crokes Hurling will make the transition to third level education easier for two of their young hurlers”

Dr Vivion Crowley, President, The Biological Society, Trinity College Dublin

“The GAA is community based and it is fantastic to see Kilmacud Crokes Hurling reflect that in their investment in the educational future of two of their young hurlers.”

Prof Chris Thompson, RCSI Medical School, Dublin
