Kilmacud Crokes Hurling - Educational Bursary

On behalf of the Hurling Committee, we would like to thank you for your support for our Punchestown Race Day.  We would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to an initiative we have launched, which will be supported by the financial success of today’s event.  The proceeds of the Punchestown Race Day have been invaluable to the hurling section over the years and the recently completed Hurling Wall and Arena in Pairc de Burca is a physical embodiment of the way in which those proceeds have been invested to develop hurling in Kilmacud Crokes.  The money raised today will continue to support that broad aim.

This year, on foot of an initiative proposed by a Kilmacud Crokes stalwart, Mr Sean Allen, we have also committed some of the money raised to contribute towards the education of a hurler from the club who is starting third level education.  The hurling committee have ring fenced €1000 to be issued direct to a third level college as a contribution to tuition fees for a young hurler from the club embarking on third level education. Applications for the bursary will be invited later in the year.

We are especially pleased to announce that this initiative has been matched by a generous donation from United Drug, to allow for another, second bursary of €1000 to also be awarded.

In difficult financial times, the hurling section want to give something back to the community which supports the club, and these bursaries will help two of our young sportsmen, while stressing the importance of continuing education to our young people.  The hurling section hopes to make this an annual event.

Comments on the Educational Bursary

'It is heartening to see a sporting organisation consider a holistic view of the young people who participate in sport.  Continuing in both sport and third level education produces rounded individuals who are mentally and physically fit.  I would like to congratulate the Hurling Section of Kilmacud Crokes in their commitment to supporting third level education for their sportsmen and hope that it will be an ongoing initiative.'

Ruairi Quinn TD, Minister for Education and Skills
