Report Week Ending 12th June 2011

Body

Another great intercounty week for Dublin and for Kilmacud Crokes as Dublin with five Crokes starters (Bill O’Carroll, Jack Doughan, Barry Mulligan, Sean McGrath and Kevin O’Loughlin) advanced to the Leinster Under 21 Hurling Championship Semi-Final.

This was thanks to a convincing 4-11 to 0-11 win over Carlow at Dr Cullen Park on Wednesday 8th June 2011.  All the Crokes lads acquitted themselves well in what turned to be a relatively comfortable victory.

Not many clubs have such strong representation at this level and it was a moment to savour for the lads themselves, their families, their mentors over the years and everybody involved with hurling in the club.  For some historical comparisons see HERE.  Dublin next face Offaly in the Leinster semi final on 22nd June.  For hill16.ie match report see HERE.

In the good news stakes, hot on the heels of the under 21 success were the double championship wins for the intermediates and the progress of the Junior E’s.

On Saturday 11th June 2011 the intermediates continued their unbeaten championship campaign with a 3-18 to 2-9 win over Trinity Gaels at Druimnigh Park.  Against the wind Crokes closed the first half 2-10 to 1-6 ahead and the issue was never in doubt thereafter.  For report see HERE

The previous Wednesday, 8th June 2011, the inters entertained Fingallians at Silverpark in their third round robin championship match.  Playing against the wind they broke for tea one point in arrears.  The second half took expected lines at the end of which the Kilmacud side was 0-19 to 0-9 in front.  For report see HERE.  These two wins place Crokes at the head of their championship group with one round robin match left to play.

At the same time on Wednesday in Tymon North the Junior A’s found the going too hot against a skillful Faughs second team in their third championship outing.  Having had the favour of the wind and incline Crokes trailed 2-8 to 0-6 at the break.  While they fought gamely in the second period and were unlucky not to raise at least one green flag there could be no argument with the 2-18 to 0-11 result.  Best for the vanquished were the stand out Paddy Igoe at full back, goalkeeper Eoin Dalton, Niall Butler, Damien McSweeney, Barrai Brennan and Shane Canny.  On Saturday it was a similar story as Good Counsel took the championship points at Silverpark.

The Junior E’s garnered two on field and two off field championship points.  The former came on Tuesday as they gained their fifth championship point from a possible six with a 1-11 draw against Skerries Harps at Silverpark.  Despite having far more of the play Crokes were a point behind at half time.  This trend continued in the second half as the Stillorgan men could never put daylight between the teams and although two points clear approaching the finish line they were reeled in.  For report see HERE.  Two more points were gained courtesy of a walkover from Commercials in respect of the game fixed for Sunday 12th June 2011.

Also on Tuesday the under 13A’s travelled to Balheary where they overcame Fingallians by 4-4 to 0-9 in the first division of the league.  At under 12 level the A’s made it four wins from four with a close Division 1 win (2-4 to 1-4) against Whitehall at Deerpark.  The B’s shard the spoils (3-5 to 4-2) in their fourth division tie with St Vincents.  On Sunday the under 14A’s had a run out against a Dublin Development squad in Bray.
