Minor A’s beat Boden, B’s beat Raheny

On Sunday morning 4th October 2009 the minor A’s cemented their place as group toppers when defeating Ballyboden St Enda by 2-8 to 0-7 at Sancta Maria in the final round robin game of the championship.

Click here for more on this match, including photos and video extracts Scores were at a premium. Crokes led 0-5 to 0-4 after twenty two minutes and it took a similar period for them to go 0-6 to 0-4 ahead. This came through a good Sean McGrath point and, in his second crucial intervention within a minute, the same player’s persistence under the dropping ball set up Mark O’Dwyer for a goal. Boden were not to lie down and had the margin down to a goal, 1-6 to 0-6, by the fifty fifth minute. Sixty seconds later McGrath’s coolly slotted over a 50 metre free from the right side line.

Almost immediately it took a good save by keeper Eoin Dalton to keep daylight between the sides, even if Boden posted a minor from the resultant 65. Next, from an extreme angle, Mark O’Dwyer’s point put four between the teams again. Shortly after, Boden were awarded a 20 metre free that was saved at the expense of a 65. From this came Boden’s fourteenth wide of the hour (to Crokes nine). In the dying moments Barry Mulligan’s deflected shot found the net to leave the final score 2-8 to 0-7. On a day when defences were on top, the rearguard spine of Eoin Dalton, Sean Murphy and Jack Doughan was steadfast. Up front Jude Sweeney and Sean McGrath were most prominent. For report see HERE.

Team:

E Dalton, P McCague, S Murphy, P Collins, E Grogan, J Doughan, A Carr, C Doherty, M Kinsella, M O’Dwyer (1-1), D McVeigh (0-1), B Mulligan (1-1), H Byrne, J Sweeney, S McGrath (0-5, f-3, 65-1). Subs: E O’Byrne for D McVeigh, D Mulligan for H Byrne

The minor B’s went to St Anne’s Park to take on Raheny, the leaders of their minor C championship group. A closely contested game saw Crokes come out on top 3-8 to 0-14. Most prominent for the victors were Karl Russell, Niall Murphy, Louis Whelan, Ken Kelly and Thomas Clarke. The Crokes scores came from Jonathon Healy-Hayes (2-2), Eoghan O’Dwyer (1-0), Ken Kelly (0-3), Thomas Clarke (0-2), Eoin Doherty (0-1). At the time of writing we await developments as the calculators are now out to see who progresses to the knock out stages.

On a balmy day the Division 1 cup final was a nail biting encounter with a last minute Crokes free sent to the net to snatch a one point victory. On an occasion when everyone was a winner our thanks in particular to the visiting teams and mentors, the Crokes parents under Fiona Hayes guidance who produced a splendid catering feat, the referees, many from our senior team, the Juvenile Hurling committee for sponsoring the idea, both sets of Crokes players and their mentors led by manager Jim Ryan.

Seniors v Newtownshandrum

The previous day, Saturday 3rd October 2009, the seniors traveled to Toomevarra in Tipperary to play Cork county finalists Newtownshandrum in a challenge. A strong opening 20 minutes secured the result for the Corkmen. From then on, an upped work rate provided dividends for the Kilmacud side in what proved to be a valuable outing against an opposition that included the O’Connor twins, Ben and Gerry, Cathal Naughton and Pat Mulcahy. Our thanks to Toomevara for allowing the use of their facilities, our opponents and to referee Christy McLoughlin and his officials.

Other results

Back in Dublin there was a full programme of CCC1 Hurling fixtures. Results will be posted later.
