AIB Festival of Hurling Schools Tournament

The much deferred AIB Festival of Hurling Schools tournament finally took place in Glenalbyn on Wed 28th. September. The tournament is part of The AIB Festival of Hurling weekend but had to be postponed on two previous occasions due to inclement weather.

Six teams took part in the event which was divided into two groups of three teams each. Group 1 was topped by St. Laurences with visiting teams St. Fiacras ( Beaumont ) and St. Cronans ( Bray ) providing strong opposition. Group 2 saw three local schools in battle with Hollypark topping the group over Oatlands and San Teresa’s .

In the cross over semi finals St. Laurences defeated Oatlands with St. Cronans taking the honours over Hollypark .

The Shield proved to be a great game with the two local schools, Oatlands and Hollypark, putting on a fantastic show of skills. In the end victory went to Hollypark but all credit to Oatlands.

St. Laurences have been the pioneers at schools hurling in the club for many years and they used all that experience to see off a valiant St. Fiacras side in a top class Cup Final. In a final that brought out the best of everything that is hurling St. Laurences were worthy winners and deservit champions of The AIB Festival of Hurling Schools Tournament for 2005.

A big thanks to all the schools who participated, in trying circumstances, a special thanks to club hurling coach Niall Costigan who did trojan work and finally to AIB who gave great help and support.
