Match Report/ Match Highlights:

Under 15 Hurlers – Produce a Fine Performance in Head Quarters.

On a bright Tuesday evening the Crokes Under 15 hurlers continued their Under 15 Championship campaign with a fine victory over Erins Isle in a fine sporting game on a great surface in Pairc de Burca and have guaranteed a place in next August’s semi final.

Crokes started the match playing with the benefit of the breeze and opened strongly. In a blistering opening 6 minute spell, Crokes stunned Isles, Eoin Dalton converted a free from the half forward line after 1 minute, two minutes later Darren received a great ball out on the left wing and struck it over the bar, a minute later, Killian won the ball out on the wing and ran for goal, hitting a rocket of a shot that the Isles keeper was powerless to stop, a minute later, Darren added another long range point to his tally and then another minute later Sean Murphy opened his tally with a well taken point from the corner. Isles then started to get to the pace of the game and played a lot better, they took their first score in the 10th minute when they scored a goal and added a converted free three minutes later.  Crokes then upped the pace again and although hurling very well were struggling to hit the ball over the bar.  However, Darren in the 16th minute, Naomhan in the 22nd minute and Murph in the 25th minute all added a goal each, before Isles ended the scoring in the first half, with a point, their first score from play. At half time, Crokes were leading 4 – 04 to 1 – 02. Crokes were playing well; but with Isles playing with the wind in the second half, we knew that we were in for a tough second half.

In the second half, it was Isles who had the blistering start.  In the second minute after the re-start, Isles scored another goal from a free and a minute later added another goal, after some sloppy defending, now there was only two points in it.  Crokes woke up and Naomhan stopped the rot with a great point in the 4th minute of the half.  Then Eoin went on a scoring spree, having moved into the corner forward position; he scored two goals and a point over the next six minutes to effectively kill off the Isle’s challenge.  Isles pegged back a point in the 15th minute, but this proved to be their final score, as Crokes completely dominated the last quarter.  Some great passing movements saw Crokes add five unanswered points, with great individual points from Matthew, following a great burst from midfield and from Bill, after he won the ball in the half back line and broke through their midfield line before slotting the ball over the bar.  Darren, Naomhan and Murph scored the other three.  During this period, Eddie was unlucky, with a couple of narrow wides, not to add his name to the score sheet.  Killian rounded off Croke’s scoring with another well-taken goal at the stroke of full time.

In the end Crokes ran out winners with a comfortable 7-11 to 3-03 margin. But the game was not as easy as the scoreline indicates and does not fully reflect how well Isle’s played. After some shaky moments in the fullback line in the first few minutes of the second half, the fullback line returned to form and controlled their line for the rest of the game, the half back line were immense and Crokes ruled midfield.  Regarding the forwards, the scoreline tells its own tale.

The next outing is against Naomh Fionnbarra in the third round robin match of the Championship on the 7th May ’06. Finbarrs are also unbeaten so far this year, so we expect that will be a tough encounter.
