Week Ending 17th May 2009

Body

The week opened with the under 15’s comprehensive 6-12 to 0-3 Division 1 league win over Cuala at Thomastown on Tuesday 12th May.  Smarting from dropping a point against Whitehall Colmcilles the previous Sunday, the Crokes boys took the game to their under strength opponents and by the quarter the issue was decided.

Midweek wins for the Minors

Wednesday produced double League wins for the minors at Silverpark.  The A’s accounted for Crumlin in Division 1, 2-7 to 1-5, while the B’s, in Division 3, were much too strong for Setanta.

U16s overcome Whitehall

Winning ways were continued on Thursday night also at the Leopardstown venue when the under 16’s overcame Whitehall Colmcilles by 3-7 to 1-7 in League Division 1.  This was a personal triumph for Jack Dineen who scored 2-1.  Others to star in a good overall team performance included Jamie Clinton, Conal O’Neill, Emmet Doherty, Ross McGowan and Ken Kelly.

Team: P Tighe, J Clinton, S Boyd, N Hanley, O O’Carroll, C Delaney, C O’Neill (0-1), E Doherty (0-1), R McGowan, J Dineen (2-1), B Horan (0-1), F Motherway, K Kelly (0-3, f-1, 65-1), K Finn (1-0), J O’Brien.  Subs: C Gormley for J O’Brien and C O’Byrne for F Motherway, F Motherway for K Finn.

Féile na nGael postponed 'til next week due to bad weather

Saturday 16th May opened on a downer with the Dublin wide postponement of Feile na nGael due to adverse weather conditions.  Feile will now be played next weekend with the Saturday activity in Silverpark from 10 am.  More work for Ronan Conway and his volunteers.  Our thanks to them all.  Please come along to support the Crokes boys on Saturday 23rd May.  For precise match times click HERE

Dublin Minors v Laois

Dublin minors traveled to Portlaoise on Saturday afternoon to play Laois in the ESB Leinster Minor Hurling Championship quarter-final.  Dublin led 1-2 to 0-3 at half time thanks to a Naomhan O’Reardan goal .  Five and a half minutes into the second half Laois goaled to take control of the game.  In the sixth minute of injury time a Sean McGrath goal, that would have leveled the game, was disallowed for a square ball and the midlanders won 1-9 to 1-6.  Apart from O’Reardan and McGrath who started, Jack Doughan came on as a substitute and Crokes were also represented on the squad by Eddie O’Byrne, Cillian Doherty and Darren McVeigh with Pat Halpin being part of the management team.  For reports click  HERE and HERE

Intermediates draw with Port Laoise

After the minor game the Intermediates, who had traveled in support, played Portlaoise in a challenge.  The game ended honours even at 3-9 to 2-12.  The sign of good clubmen, two of the Dublin minors, Jack Doughan and Darren McVeigh, put their disappointment to one side and lined out.  Aided by the wind and first half goals from Alan Tiernan and Doughan, Crokes led 2-8 to 0-3 at half time.  The tables were turned in the second period where it took heroic defending particularly from Fergus Monnelly and Aidan Cleary and a brilliant goal from McVeigh to keep Crokes ahead.  A goal deep into injury time secured the draw for the Portlaoise men, for whose post match hospitality we are very grateful.

Minor A's lose to Boden

On Sunday the Minor A’s lost to Ballyboden in Ballycullen in a Division 1 league game by six points, 1-12 to 0-9.  For Crokes goalkeeper Eoin Dalton and Gary Melican were superb while top scorer was Darren McVeigh with four points (three frees).  Also on the scoresheet were Mark O’Dwyer (0-2), Eddie O’Byrne, Matthew Kinsella and Naomhan O’Rearden all with one point. The week concluded with a three team tournament in Glenalbyn for rugby playing schools.  At the end of a titanic final extra time could not separate the teams and the trophy was shared by Gonzaga College and Terenure College.  For more see HERE

At primary level the very successful series of blitzes for second and third classes in local schools concluded.  Held over four days on 29th April, 30th April, 11th May and 13th May, over 160 boys took part.  A full report and images can be seen HERE.  Our thanks to all the school authorities and teachers involved as well as to the boys themselves and their families.  Especial thanks to Kilmacud Hurling Coach Niall Corcoran for organising and co-ordinating.

Parental Assistance

We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Quote from Parent

“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved.  And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career!  Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
