Week Ending 27th July 2008

A hard earned win by a youthful Crokes intermediate team over Clanna Gael in Silverpark on Thursday 24th July 2008 provided a welcome fillip to the side’s championship hopes.  The 1-13 to 0-7 victory owed much to assured free taking, a superb back sextet and efficient net minding.  With four points from four games Crokes hopes now rest on the outcome of their final group game against pace setters Craobh Chiaran.  For report on the Clanna Gael game click HERE

On Tuesday evening the seniors entertained Tinnahinch in Pairc de Burca.  A spellbinding opening left Crokes 2-3 to 0-0 clear within ten minutes and the result was never thereafter in doubt.  However, as the Laois men shook the effects of travel from their legs, the game became closer with the intensity much stepped up in the second half.  Noteworthy among the visiting party was former Crokes Hurling Committee member (1978 to 1981), Joe Conroy, long since back in his native heath.

Squad: Michael Dalton, Willie Ryan, Daibhi De Paor, Brian Motherway, Niall Corcoran, Rory O’Carroll, Fergal Armstrong, Adrian Grogan, Aodhan de Paor, James Burke, Hugh Gannon, Donal McGovern, Eoin Fitzgerald, Neil Casey, Conor Clinton, Rob O’Loughlin, Damien Byrne and Ray Mangan

The same evening the Junior B’s bowed out of the championship with their honour intact after a brave display against a very strong Na Fianna side that is fancied to go all the way.   Na Fianna led by 1-12 to 1-4 at half time but a second half revival led by Niall Butler made a real game of it.  Butler, who had scored one goal from play and 3 points from frees in the first half, rolled back the years to put 3 more past the helpless Na Fianna goalkeeper, one from a '21, in the second half.  He threw over three more points from frees for good measure.  Na Fianna, however, weathered the storm and popped over some fine points to run out six point winners on a score of 2-23 to 5-8. Besides Butler, others who starred were, Richie Tighe in goal, James Byrne, Aidan Byrne, Ciaran O'Grady and John Ross Hunt.

The team can count themselves unfortunate to have been drawn in by far the tougher group, winning just once but going own by one point, three points, three points and six points in four of their five outings. A number of young players got their first taste of adult hurling action this year and will be the better for it.

Team: Richie Tighe, Paul Ryan, James Byrne, Niall Hall, Ken Noctor, Aidan Byrne, Shane Canny, Conor Sheehan, Colm Crowley, Conor Condon (0-1), John Ross Hunt (1-0), Ciaran O'Grady (0-2), Colm Maher, Niall Butler (4-5), Adrian Crean; Subs: Pat Kennedy, Paddy Byrne, David Stafford.

Management: Paul Regan, Tom Bohan (Jr), Mick Bermingham, Pat Kennedy.

Despite contesting well, on Wednesday, the Junior E (C3’s) lost their championship game at home to St Josephs/O’Connell Boys.
