Week Ending June 2nd 2008

Body

On Monday 26th May Scoil Lorcain, Monkstown reached the Final of their Cumann na mBunscol final, captained by their only Crokes star, Dara Ó Gallchobhair, who scored 2-02, from midfield.  In the final played in Parnell Park on Tuesday Dara was again to the fore (scoring 1-02) as his side had to give way to a stronger Johnstown squad.  The previous week St Laurence’s, Kilmacud won their Junior title (for report click HERE ) and lost the final of the senior competition while the reverse was the case for Scoil San Treasa, Mount Merrion.  Congratulations to all involved and especial thanks to the teachers who took charge of the teams.

Senior and Junior Team Action

On Tuesday there were good wins for both Junior teams.  The Junior C3’s defeated Peregrines by 1-8 to 1-5 in the league at Blakestown while the Junior B’s won by 1-13 to 3-6 against Faughs in their League at Tymon Park North.  For reports click on the relevant link below:

Wednesday saw the senior hurlers got back to winning ways with a deserved 1-17 to 2-7 win over Faughs in the senior hurling league in Silverpark.  Crokes raced into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead but by half time Faughs had come back into the game and trailed 0-10 to 0-5.  On the resumption the home team took charge and by the 50th minute had opened up a twelve point gap, the goal doubled to the net by Eoin Fitzgerald following good combination by Fergus Garvey and Neil Casey.  In the remaining ten minutes Faughs ran up 2-2 to Crokes’ 0-3.  Best for Crokes, in a game that saw the return to action of Hugh Gannon, were Willie Ryan, Adrian Grogan, Neil Casey and Eoin Fitzgerald

Intercounty Action

On the intercounty front three Kilmacud representatives, Ross O’Carroll, Barry O’Rorke and Shane O’Rorke, played for Dublin in their Leinster Under 21 Hurling Championship quarter final victory over Laois.  The following is the www.hill16.ie report

U21 hurlers edge out Laois

DUBLIN 0-18 LAOIS 1-12

The clinical placed ball expertise of Kevin O'Reilly steered Dublin to a Leinster U21 HC semi-final after the provincial holders edged out Laois in O'Moore Park on Wednesday night.

The Dubs had lots of possession but failed to translate it into scoring chances as they finished the stronger to book a spot against the Cats in Parnell Park on June 18.

Dublin led 0-9 to 0-7 at the interval and hit the opening four points of the second half to stretch their advantage.

But then Laois scored the only goal of game when a long delivery into the danger area broke for John Gaughan and he pulled to the net.

With ten minutes to go the sides were level but the Dubs showed good nerve to seal victory with Ross O'Carroll and the free-taking of O'Reilly separating the counties.

SCORERS - Dublin: K O’Reilly 0-8 (5f, 2 ’65s', 1 lineball), R O’Carroll 0-4, D O’Dwyer 0-2, S Lambert, S Durkin, J Boland, J Maher 0-1 each. Laois: Z Keenan 0-9 (6f, 2 ’65s'), J Gaughan 1-0, W Hyland, D Dooley, D Peacock 0-1 each.
DUBLIN - F McGarry; P Schutte, P Callaghan, R Drumgoole; P Kelly, T Brady, J McCaffrey; J Boland, S Lambert; S Durkin, D O’Dwyer, P Ryan; R O’Carroll, K O’Reilly, J Maher. Subs: B O’Rorke for Maher (37), O Gough for Callaghan (43, inj), P Garbutt for Durkin (51), S O’Rorke for Lambert (59).
LAOIS - P Carroll; J Prior, D Maher, A Kavanagh; C Dooley, T Burke, B Stapleton; C Delaney, M Bermingham; Z Keenan, J Gaughan, W Hyland; S Burke, D Peacock, D O’Mahoney. Subs: N Delaney for O’Mahoney 44), R Delaney for N Delaney (46).
REF - A Lagrue (Kildare).

More Under Age action!

Friday had the under 13A’s and under 14’s in league action.  The former had a decisive 6-7 to 0-2 win away to St Vincents with star performances from Dara Mullin, Odhran O’Siochru, Edward Campion, Davy Kane, Ronan Horgan and Cian MacGabhann.  The under 14’s defeated Na Fianna at Moibhi Road by 3-14 to 1-7.  Among Crokes best were Michael Herlihy in goals, Mark Collins, Louis O’Sullivan, Matthew McNicholas, Tomas Barr, Hugh Gowing and Ross McGowan

Saturday was another busy underage day.  The under 13B’s defeated Naomh Barrog in St Anne’s Park by 6-3 to 0-5.  Gregory Buckley, Andrew Lynch, Michael Kane Adam Brennan, with a hat trick, and Matthew Redmond were among the leading lights.  The under 14B’s received a walkover from Naomh Fionbarra.

The under 11s had another busy weekend of action.  On Saturday they fulfilled the fixtures left vacant by the under 12s trip to Cork acquitting themselves well in a three team Leinster tournament hosted by Cuala in Clonkeen College.

In the first match they were beaten 5-5 to 2-5 in a well contested game whose closeness was not reflected in the final scoreline. If fact Crokes led by a point with 15 minutes left but 3 goals and 2 points for Cuala to just one point for Crokes in that final period left Cuala flattered by the winning margin, if not by the result.

Naas the beat Cuala in a close match to set up a tense final game that Crokes needed to win to force a 3 way tie. The sides were level, 1-2 each, at half-time and through much of the second half. However, the Kildare outfit got the breaks in the last 10 minutes to run out 4-3 to 2-2 winners. Both games were great learning experiences for the lads, who had to adapt their game to a faster pace to avoid being outmuscled by the physically stronger opponents.

On Bank Holiday Monday the under 11’s had their traditional trip to the sunny south-east, this time to take on an Oulart under 10 to under12 selection. The pleasing aspect of this game was that the Crokes lads had clearly learned from Saturday and moved the ball very quickly and were first to most breaks. At half time we led 1-6 to 0-2 and tagged on a further 2-2 to Oulart's one goal in the second half.

Squad: Cillian Fleming, Stephen McEntee, Callum Pearson, Conn O'Cleirigh, Conor Kelly, Luke Gaffney, Darragh Butler, Johnny Maher, Conor O'Dwyer, Chris Kealy, Oisin Dowling, Joe Doyle, Martin Connor, Feargal Whitely, Stephen Crossan, Alex Considine, Adam Tuck, Cathal Keane, Tom Fox, Brian Grogan

The under 12’s went on a two day adventure to Na Piarsaigh in Cork.  A great time was had by all.  In the first game the Crokes lads were very unlucky to lose to Na Piarsaigh.  With two minutes remaining Crokes were a point up but two late goals were their undoing.  The second game against Killeagh was a cracking match at the end of which the Stillorgan boys had to give way.  Killeagh went on to beat the hosts in the final.  The third game on Saturday was a victory over another Cork side Fr O’Neills and on Sunday Crokes won the plate final against the same opposition by 2-9 to 2-7 with Ruairi Geraghty scoring the winning goal.  Overall the standard of hurling was very high and this was a most worthwhile and enjoyable trip.  Many thanks to Na Piarsaigh for looking after us so well and also to our own travelling support.
