Underage Camogie Trip to Wexford 2022

Body

Our u9 to u13 girls had a super road trip to Wexford over the weekend - some great games against Duffry Rovers, followed by witnessing a fine display of Camogie by Senior Dublin girls against Wexford. The memories of the day brought together by Peter Walsh below

The girls were great. And the craic was mighty.

The Crokes Girls, The Dublin Girls, Our Girls.

The striking and passing, the fighting and support. The scores and the saves.

The laughter and the friendship and the autographs and the cheers.

From scoring goals to Golden Arches.

They were great. And did us proud.

Liz from Morton’s Buses set the scene and the standard. There early, and raring to go.

The bus was abuzz as we meandered down the M11 and across the Wexford crossroads, byroads and backroads to Clonee the home of the famous Duffry Rovers.

Our hosts have amazing facilities and had three pitches set up for us for the under 9, under 10/11 and under 12/13 matches.

And what matches they were. Tough tackling, sharp shooting, lifting, striking, catching and scoring.

The crokes girls gave as good as they got and great experience and enjoyment was gained.

We really appreciated the welcome and opportunity afforded to us by the Duffry Rovers players mentors and community and look forward to hosting them in Dublin one the future.

Derek T spoke to each team and the collective group and his words of praise and encouragement were very well received.

After lunching together in the super stand and facilities we made the short journey to the Raparees Starlight’s pitch in Enniscorthy for the Dublin senior game.

For many of the girls it was their first senior inter county match, and we were treated to a fine fixture, performance and result.

The Dublin team, with our own Issy Davis starting in corner forward, didn’t have the best starts. Two early Wexford goals coupled with a rain shower had us concerned.

But out came the south east sun and with us the girls in blue, all guns blazing.

The Dublin team fought hard to be very much in contention at half time. While both senior teams rested at the break the field was taken over by the young Camogie players of the future for the customary half time puck around. A lovely tradition and highlight.

It wasn’t long before the senior girls were back on the pitch proper and the Dubs went from strength to strength. The highlight of the game was our Issy’s two wonderfully taken goals that pushed on the blue wave. The girls from the capital winning out by 2 goals and 4 points in the end.

After the game our young charges flew on to the field once again, in search of their heroes this time.

And all the dublin girls have so generously and enthusiastically of their time for chats, selfies, autographs and encouragement. Role models all. But none more so than our Issy. Every question answered, every photo stood for. And it was lovely to see her Mum Sheena together with Sheena’s own dad - Issy’s biggest fan - and sister join us on the field to celebrate. Club truly is family.

To top off the day we descended upon the Golden Arches of McDonalds in Gorey for sustenance, snacks and craic.

We wound our way back up the N11 with songs and chants and memories galore.

The Crokes Cailíni on Tour. A Tradition has begun….

Well done and thanks to Duffry Rovers, Morton’s coaches and all the parents and girls who travelled. Bring on the next trip!
