The Kilmacud u12 hurlers (2007) recently travelled to spend the May bank holiday weekend in the Deise, with plenty of fun and hurling. 32 players along with another 30 parents and siblings travelled on Saturday morning 4th May as far as the giants of Waterford hurling, Ballygunner GAA Club. Our A team won well against Ballygunner A, with 6 points to spare. Our B team lost by the same margin. We were well looked after by the local club and all were impressed by the great facilities.

Before travelling on to An Rinn in the West of the county (where we stayed overnight) we called in to famous local Hurley maker, Frank Murphy. He demonstrated the making of a hurl from raw ash plank to finished product and the boys bought a supply of hurls to keep us going for the rest of the season!

It was on then to the Gaeltacht of An Rinn, bathed in sunshine. After a dip in the harbour at the fishing village of Baile na nGall, it was back to our accommodation at "An Seanachai" bar and restaurant where we ate and relaxed for the rest of the night.

On Sunday morning it was on to a tournament at Páirc Ui Shiothcháin, organised by the local juvenile club - An Ghaeltacht. Four teams took part: two of ours plus St Patrick’s GAA Club and An Ghaeltacht themselves. Our lads performed very well, winning two matches each and drawing in our “derby”.

Finally, we were invited back to the local community hall for music, a BBQ and treats. The hospitality was fantastic over the entire weekend!

An Ghaeltacht very generously presented U12 lead mentor Ros Criostóir with a beautiful crystal trophy to commemorate the weekend. This was very much appreciated as the idea for the weekend had been hatched when so many travelled from Kilmacud to An Rinn to attend the funeral of Ros’ father Muiris earlier this year.

We couldn’t have been better looked after – míle buíochas ó chroí – and we look forward to hosting An Ghaeltacht in the near future in Kilmacud.
