Minor League Division 5 South Final

Date: December 1st 2013   Venue Páirc de Burca         Report by Robbie Moloney

Kilmacud Crokes B  7 – 18  St. Damians  2 - 10

Kilmacud Crokes Minor B team avenged their championship final loss with a sweeping League Final victory at home to second place St. Damiens (Robert Emmets/James Gaels).

Finishing the league with a points difference of 132, the lads showed how aggrieved they were by putting in a savage hour of relentless football, winning by a scoreline of 7-18 to 2-10.

In their League encounter, Kilmacud only scraped through by the barest margin and St. Damien's fighting spirit was in evidence throughout.  But it was former Captain Barney Sultan and Goal scoring machine, Kevin Creasy that laid the goal foundations  for a seemingly facile home win.  Goals also came from St. Benildus players Pete Moloney, Gavin McDermott with a brace form Mikey Crowley.

St. Damiens continued a spirited performance right to the end, bagging a well worked goal from midfield, but failing with a penalty as the closed gloves of captain Dave Murphy saved the penalty and the follow up.

In front of a decent Glenalbyn crowd, the Minor B's, losing only one match all season, did the new jersey proud. In a day of superlatives, it is hard to leave anyone out of a 20 man performance.

Dave Murphy said:  "It was just an amazing year few lows but many highs, just a great group of lads that have given everything all year, and of course it wouldn't have been done without the momentous effort of Michael and Francis, happy to have have two great years at minor football and just wish the lads the best of luck next year."

Michael Kelly added that "this squad are a credit to the club and that it was a pleasure working with them for the year – hopefully they will continue to play for Kilmacud in 2014  at minor and adult level"

As some of them leave the minor ranks, it was good to see these lads finish something they started on this pitch a dozen years ago. Some have big futures in the game, some will be the stalwarts of the Intermediate and Junior sections, but no one can ever take away from them, he achievements of this season and this morning.  Congratulations.

The Crokes Minor B team have had a fantastic winning streak in their League. From the depths of winter and through the 2013 heatwave - they've continued to dominate their Division. Wednesday night's display in Silverpark was a fine example of blending established players with newcomers, as well as with some who have just recently returned to football.

Within seconds of winning the throw in Niall Kelly scored a point, from a Barney Sultan pass. The kick-out was won by Crokes but 'Boden fouled and Niall Kelly split the posts again. 'Boden won their kickout this time and pushed forward only to have their attack turned around with Mikey passing to Fintan Jordan, who kicked across to Conor Lyndon and over the bar for a third point in as many minutes. 'Bodens first attempt to score came in the sixth minute, but went wide.

Following stoppage due to a non-match injury, 'Boden won the Crokes kickout, but Crokes challenged well and regained possession only to lose it again. A 'Boden error gave Crokes a free on the righthand wing - it was kicked to Barney who passed it in to Niall for a perfect goal. Boden went on the attack again and won a free. Crokes won the ball and Barney was fouled on the 21 - so a handy point followed.Although 'Boden won many of the Crokes kickouts, our half back line turned it around, fed it into the half forward line and points followed goals and goals followed points for the remainder of the first half to give a scoreline of 6 - 9 to 0-0.

Richie Mulholland got the first point of the second half. Then for a few minutes the Blue&Whites attacked, won a free but sent it wide. It was 6 minutes into the second-half when they got their first score - and that was a goal. 'Boden won the kickout and attacked for a few minutes but Crokes turned it around and followed with 4 more points before 'Boden scored their first point. With 15 minutes to go Crokes had 7-15. At 12 minutes to go Crokes got a penalty -Barry O'Sullivan stepped up and did the business! 'Boden won their kickout, worked it well up the centre and found the net. Crokes persisted to the final whistle, getting a further 2 goals and 3 points.
Final score Crokes 10-18 to Ballyboden St.Enda's 2-3.
