Brilliant comeback by Intermediates v Trinity Gaels

Body

On Thursday 8 May 2008 in Silverpark, the Intermediate team had their first outing in the 2008 championship and what a thriller it turned out to be. Both teams opened brightly but failed to score in the first 7 or 8 minutes. Crokes were then hit with an injury to forward Traolach O'Sullivan which seemed to unsettle the team. Trinity Gaels started to dominate the scoreboard and rattled of a quick succession of points.  Crokes despite a number of chances were unable to hit the target and after 20 minutes had still failed to register on the scoreboard.  A goal for Trinity Gaels seemed to spur on Crokes and strong performances from Eamonn Sheehy at wing back, Aidan McCarthy in the corner and a confident display from Richie Sweetnam in goals ensured that Crokes remained in contention. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Crokes registered their first score from play and quickly followed with 2 more points.

At half time, Crokes trailed by 1-7 to 0-3 but were facing into a slight wind. A more focused and determined Crokes team came out for the second half and turned in a hugely improved performance.  Fergus Monnelly started to dominate from centre back and the Dalton brothers started to win more and more ball in the forward line. Crokes patiently reeled in Trinity Gaels with some excellent points from captain Brendan Hoyne and Richie Power.  After 20 minutes of Crokes domination, the deficit was reduced to 2 points but a determined Trinity Gaels came back into contention. It increasingly looked like Crokes would need a goal and with 7 minutes to play, up popped Barrai Brennan coming through from midfield to drive a low ball to the net from the 20 metre line. For the first time, Crokes were into the lead by a point but Trinity pulled back the scores with their first point of the game. A nervous last five minutes ensued with both sides missing good chances but it was Crokes who secured the win with Kevin Dalton popping up on the right wing to score and excellent winner. An entertaining and competitive first championship outing, the Crokes team will take confidence from the determined manner of the victory.

On the day, there were outstanding performances from Eamonn Sheehy, Richie Sweetnam and Aidan McCarthy over the hour while others such as Mick Garvey, Fergus Monnelly, Joe O'Reilly, Eoin Fingleton epitomised the winning mentality needed during the 2nd half.
