Convincing win over Cuala

Body

On Sunday 13th September 2009 the Kilmacud Crokes senior hurlers secured a championship quarter final spot with a comprehensive win over Cuala at O’Toole Park.

Scores were slow to come in the opening twenty five minutes, at which stage Crokes led 0-4 to 0-1. In the remaining five minutes Cuala points bracketed a fine fetch and finish to the net by James Burke to make it 1-4 to 0-3 at the interval.

The game was finished as a contest in the opening five minutes of the second period thanks to an unanswered 1-3 for Crokes. The first point from Aidan Cleary after a noteworthy cameo from Shea Gillen who tracked back, twice blocked and then effected the clearance to James Burke who set up Cleary. Next Ross O’Carroll tipped a high ball into the path on the onrunning Kevin O’Loughlin. The corner forward billowed the net. Then the same player put over a free and in short order O’Carroll sent the umpire scurrying for the white flag again. Thereafter it was a question of playing the game out.

With Crokes on top in all areas (as Cuala finished with fourteen men) every man played his part. Richard Sweetnam did everything asked of him in goal, Niall Lillis was strong at full back, Aidrian Grogan dominant at left half, Shea Gillen got though an amount of work at midfield and Ronan Walsh and Kevin O’Loughlin always posed a threat up front.

On a final of 3-11 to 0-6 Crokes play Craobh Chiaran in their final round robin game to decide who tops the group.
