Match Report/ Match Highlights:

Kilmacud Crokes had a wonderful victory in the Minor ‘C’ Hurling Championship at a windswept O’Toole Park on Sunday morning. Playing against a strong wind in the first half Crokes trailed by two points at half time, but with the wind at their backs for the second half the Crokes lads put in a powerful performance to run out comfortable winners.

Cuala started the game strongly, wrapping up four points from frees after 15minutes. Over that period we had made some good scoring chances but were unlucky not to score. Sheego gave us our first point from a free after 16 minutes. Cuala replied with another point on 20 minutes. At this point Brian Hanamy switched with Niall Gallagher; this had the desired effect and we started to win more possession. Sheego then rocked the opposition with a superb goal on 24 minutes. This was the crucial score of the game. There was some brilliant team play to set up this goal. Cuala got another point from a free to leave it 0-06 to 1-01 at half time. Unquestionably our defence was the key factor of this half; they hurled with great spirit and cleared their lines well. They continually frustrated the Cuala forwards. Shane Mc Nicholas stood tallest within this group. All the Cuala’s scores came from frees.

The second half opened with Crokes rallying off four points (3 Frees) over the next 10 minutes from the brilliant Barra O’Leidhin. Crokes led from this time on to the finish. After 10 minutes, Chris Cunningham was introduced and had an immediate impact on the game. Brian Hanamy delivered the final blow to Cuala with a great goal from a beautiful cross from the hard working Brian Mahon. Crokes were now in control and three more points were scored by Brian Hanamy, Barra and Sheego. Crokes won by a margin of eight points.

Overall this was a great team performance, Richie Tighe had another great game in goals, Shane McNicholas was outstanding while others excelled including Paddy Igoe, Arthur Lyons, Niall Mulligan and Gary McMorrow. Alan McPhilips had a great second half. Cillian Caffrey and Karl Diaz worked hard in midfield. Up front Barra O’Leidhin gave a five star performance with Brian Hanamy, Brian Sheehan, Brian Mahon and Chris Cunningham playing significant roles. Niall Gallagher and Eoin McGabhann worked tirelessly for the team.

Niall McIntyre, Ken Noctor and Timmy Ryan who came on as subs also played their part. A delighted Niall Gallagher received the Synnott Cup amid the wild scenes of celebration from the Crokes supporters.

Our thanks to Richie Stakelum, Billy Noctor, Joe Mulligan, Ken Hanamy, Mick and Kieran Hynes who gave us a dig out on the day.
