Crokes teams reach the finals of the U10 Hurling Tournament

Body

The second week of the Juvenile Autumn Hurling Festival saw the U10’s take centre stage on Sunday in Glenalbyn and both competing teams put in some great performances to earn a place in their respective finals.

On the main pitch Crokes began their group matches with a very hard fought win over O’Donovan Rossa from Belfast by 1-2 to 0-1. The second match was also a closely contested affair with Naomh Eanna from Gorey and some determined defending by Crokes eventually earned them a win by 0-3 to no score. This meant that the last group game against Nenagh Eire Og was a winner-takes-all game as both teams had a 100% record going into the match. Crokes produced what was arguably their best performance of the day in overcoming the Tipperary boys by 3-4 to 0-2 to set up a final against Naas who managed to come through as winners of their group on score difference over O’Loughlin Gaels. The final proved to be a titanic struggle between two well matched teams and it was a well taken goal by Naas mid way through the 2nd half that was to prove the decisive score as they held on to win by 1-2 to 0-3.

First up were Dublin rivals Na Fianna and Crokes were quickly into their stride and went on to win by 3-1 to 1-0. After a short break the Kilmacud boys came out and gave an impressive performance against Naas, eventually winning by a scoreline of 3-4 to 1-2. Going in to their last match Crokes knew that only a big defeat to Naomh Eanna could possibly deny them a place in the final and they were in no mood to let that happen as they gave an assured performance and qualified as group winners by defeating the Wexford boys by 2-3 to 1-0. Their final opponents turned out to be Naas also and the boys turned in another great performance and to the delight of the home crowd ran out comfortable winners in the end against the Kildare lads.

The event wouldn’t have been a success without the significant efforts of many people. We would like to thank the parents of the Under 10’s (too many to mention) who really got behind the tournament and provided great support and assistance on the day, both in the catering and around the field of play. A couple of people that merit particular mention are Joan Bezeci and Tissa Gibbons for the co-ordination of the catering, Pat Horgan, Joe O’Dwyer, Peter Kenny & Enda Burns on pitch duty, Brendan Scanlon & Eamonn Murray for assisting the mentors, the referees from the senior hurling team and Liam Coughlan on his trojan work on the day and in the run up to the tournament. We would also like to thank all the teams who travelled to participate in this wonderful tournament in what turned out, thankfully, to be ideal weather conditions for hurling.
