Junior A's beaten in opening championship match by Faughs

Body

The Junior A team played their first round robin championship match of the season on Saturday (28 April 2012) against Faughs. The match gave us our second visit to Tymon in four days, but this was Faughs’ Intermediate league team we were playing, so we knew we would be up against it.

After all the rain the pitch was in great shape for the start. Crokes were quick to get into their stride and opened the scoring with a fine free from Richie. Soon after Joe won a fine catch from a puck out and scored another point. After 15 minutes we were 5 points to 1 up, with Richie scoring from frees and one from play. Then Faughs opened their shoulders to come into the game and dominated ‘til the short whistle, with the half time score Crokes 0-07,  Faughs 0-09.

Faughs had the breeze in the second half and pushed on in the third quarter, despite the best efforts of Stephen Barry and Killian. After 15 minutes we were down 2-15 to 0-08 but we raised our game substantially to the end, led by Richie with a goal from a free. Peter scored another straight away to rock Faughs and - with Conor and Damien throwing over points - we reduced the deficit. At this stage we were winning every ball and with Paddy driving every ball nearly the length of the pitch we continued to drive at Faughs. The pressure told and Richie broke through again for another goal, to leave 3 points between the teams with two minutes to go.

Unfortunately we then gave away a free to leave four in it and despite the pressure we couldn't force another score.

The final score was Kilmacud Crokes 3-12, Faughs 2-19

The team deserve great credit for their never say die spirit and gave a good account of themselves.
