Kilmacud Crokes October Festival of Hurling – U8’s

The fourth and final instalment of Kilmacud Crokes October Festival of Hurling took place on Sunday 37 October at Park De Burca.

The Festival is Kilmacud’s opportunity to repay the hospitality shown to some of our underage teams on their travels over the year, whilst also giving our young hurlers the opportunity to match up against a variety of clubs from a number of Counties.  Despite a late weather scare due to heavy rain and winds over the later part of last week, our luck held and the main pitch in Glenalbyn was passed playable on Sunday morning, thereby avoiding a late change of venue to Silverpark

This year the U8 event featured teams from Kilkenny (O’ Loughlin Gaels), Tipperary (JK Brackens), Galway (Liam Mellows), Laois (Portlaoise), Offaly ( Kilcormac-Killoughney), Waterford (Roanmore) and Wexford (Liam Mellows, Coolgreaney) as well as fellow Dublin clubs, Commercials and Ballinteer St John’s.  Kilmacud Crokes divided our squad into three even teams, and we had a total of 16 teams spread across 4 groups. A great days hurling was had by all the teams and the standard of hurling was very impressive throughout as our three squads (and all our opponents) showcased their “Air hurling” skills, mixed in with some good fast ground strokes that they have continued to develop throughout a very enjoyable year. The end of year blitz is a great way to celebrate the improvements our players are making in their skills, whilst allowing them measure their progress against teams from around the country.

All 16 teams concluded the day with cross over matches in which everybody got to play a final, and all participants received souvenir medals for competing in the Blitz. Features of the day ranged from a novel match up of the two Liam Mellows clubs, who have probably very rarely faced each other, to a superb performance by a fine Kilcormac-Killoughney squad who went through all 4 of their matches without conceding a single score. Thanks were given for the hard work that went into organising the whole day as well as to all the parents who provided a great supply of sandwiches cakes and biscuits to hungry parents and supporters throughout the day in the hurling arena.
