Match Report/ Match Highlights: Crokes played 13 a side

This was a night when the management team could only have been proud of the way the team handled themselves in relation to this particular challenge. The team had been advised of what lay ahead, but the intimidatory tactics of the opposition took even the management by surprise.

Our thanks to Pat Fenlon and his team for supplying us with Colm Garvey & Shane Timmins who contributed greatly to this victory .

The most important aspect of this game is that we won it and sport was the winner.

This was a lovely evening to play a game of hurling with the sun splitting the trees at Edenmore.

Kevin Dalton(KD) scored the first two scores from dead ball situations after ten minutes.  Monica’s replied with one point shortly after from play.  K.D took another good score from a free after 15 minutes.  Monica’s replied with another score after 17 minutes.  After 20 minutes, Crokes got another free, which resulted in a score for a particular bad challenge on Timmy Ryan, which resulted in No. 7 getting a yellow card.  Monica’s got another score just before half time.

Half Time Score 4 points to 3.

The half time chat highlighted a number of areas that we could improve on and Paddy set out very clearly our mindset for the second half.

Shortly after the start, we gave away a bad score from a poor clearance from James Mulvaney .  This gave Monica’s a lift and the Crokes defence performed admirably over the next 5 minutes as the opposition applied a lot of pressure. The game turned on its head when Brian Mahon (BM), turned on a sixpence to score a great goal - well done Brian and just at the right time.  Monica’s continued to pressurise in more ways than one over the next 10 minutes.  Timmy Ryan scored a great point from the right side of the pitch over this period.

Just after this, we gave away a poor goal to them from sloppy defending and failing to clear the ball initially. The game was at knife-edge and shortly after Monica’s scored the equaliser.  It stood at 1 – 6 each.  This was when the Crokes boys lifted their game and stood tall. (KD) came of age and caught some great balls under extreme pressure to turn the tables on Monica’s.  Kevin supplied two scores from frees for Crokes to triumph.

This was a great team performance in trying circumstances.

Players that stood out

Kevin Dalton, Shane McNicholas,( who continues to impress), Richie Tighe, Colm Garvey, Sean Mangan, Karl Diaz, Brian Mahon, Timmy Ryan.

I hope that Timmy and Shane are ok after taking some woeful belts from the opposition resulting in a yellow card and one straight red.
