Minor Hurlers – Continue winning habit in Championship Campaign

The Crokes minors faced Erin’s Isle in the second of the round robin games in this year’s Minor A Championship.  Having had a convincing win over Crumlin in the first game, Erin's Isle promised to provide stiffer opposition as they had beaten Championship favourites Ballyboden in their first game. Having lost two of our last three league games and only narrowly over coming Crumlin in the league, a more determined and focused performance was required by the team.

Crokes started the game playing up the hill facing into the bright sun and it was Isle’s who opened the scoring with a well taken point three minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Seanie McGrath opened his tally with a well taken free.  A tight opening period, with both sets of backs dominating their opposition.  Seanie scored his second converted free 14 minutes into the game equalizing Isle’s converted 65 meter free scored two minutes earlier.  Isle’s went into the lead again three minutes later with a long range point scored from midfield with Seanie equalized again with another converted free.  Twenty one minutes into the game Crokes finally took the lead with a well taken goal by Matt after a well worked passage of play initiated by Cillian in midfield.  Barry extended the lead with a great point from a sideline cut three minutes later and Mark then scored a great goal a minute later to convert Croke’s superior possession into scores.  Seanie converted another free two minutes later but Isle’s finished the half with another fine point to leave Crokes leading by a two goals and five points to four points margin.

The backs were on top of their men and the forwards were getting plenty of ball but were over playing it and a number of scoring opportunities were wasted.

The lads were warned to expect a strong second half from Erin’s Isle, but it was Crokes who opened the strongest with Hugh adding a point immediately from the throw in.  Seanie added three more points, one from a free and Jude added two before Isle’s scored their one and only point of the half.  Despite having plenty of possession, Crokes were limited to these six points in the second half and ran out eventual winners with a 2-11 to 0-05 scoreline.

Overall it was a solid performance from the backs but we’ll need a better return from our possession from the forwards if we are to beat Ballyboden St Enda’s who hammered Crumlin with a huge score of 7 - 20 to 1 - 06.  This game will be in two weeks time in Ballyboden.
