Minor B's scrape past St John's to bring winning streak to 3 league games

On a lovely Thursday evening, Crokes headed to Loreto Park to play near rivals St Johns, Ballinteer, strong contenders in the league.  With two successive victories under their belts, the Crokes management were looking for another good performance and, despite missing a few key players, were hoping to continue their winning streak.

Playing up the slope & against the breeze, Crokes roared into the lead with two points in the opening two minutes, from Barney & Shane. But St John's settled and responded with a point six minutes into the half.  St Johns were now dominating play and after ten minutes scored their first goal of the game to pull into the lead.  From the puckout Mikey took a fine point to reduce the deficit to a single point.  The teams traded three points a piece, Paul & Mikey scoring for Crokes. With a minute left, Mikey was set up by Barney & rattled the net to put Crokes back into the lead, With the last puck of the half, Paul converted a free to extend the lead to three points.  At half time, Crokes lead by 1-07 to 1-4.

St John's came out in the second half all guns blazing and it was a nip & tuck affair, with Crokes defending strongly and added three points from Paul (2) & Shane, while limiting St Johns to one point.  With 11 minutes gone in the half Mikey, taking advantage of a goalkeeping error, added a second goal to his tally, to extend the Crokes lead to 8 points.  But St John's never gave up and their pressure paid dividends when they scored their second goal to narrow the margin.  Two quick points from St John's narrowed their deficit to 3 points, but Paul, giving a man of the match performance, converted two long frees to extend Croke's lead.  St Johns pulled another point back and with the game moving into injury time they scored their third point to leave the minimum between the two sides.

The sound of the final whistle was a big relief to the Crokes sideline, as Crokes had managed to squeeze a one point win, the scoreline reading 2-12 to 3-08.  It was a fine sporting game and some impressive hurling was played by both sides.
