Minor B's Impressive Fightback

Body

On Sunday 10th October 2010 the Minor B’s headed for Broomfield for a do or die encounter with St Sylvesters in the Dublin C Hurling Championship.

With a strong wind the Malahide team piled on the early pressure and racked up five wides but the opening score came from Crokes Fionan Motherway, from a free, the first of a total of ten points, three from play.  Barry Horan then set up Eoghan O’Dwyer for a good point before a fourteenth minute goal put the home team in front by the minimum.  The sides exchanged points twice as the seasiders continued to accumulate wides (twelve in the first half).  Two late points allowed them head for tea 1-4 to 0-4 to the good.

A reinvigorated Kilmacud outfit emerged for the second half.  Within a minute substitute Jack O’Brien set up Fionan Motherway for a minor.  A flurry of scores, the pick of them a point from the sideline from O’Brien and a cleverly kicked goal from Conor J O’Dwyer saw l’equipe Stillorgan ahead 1-11 to 1-6 nine minutes later.  Syls brought it back to two by the forty seventh minute.  A Fionan Motherway point and a Barry Horan goal from a Jamie Clinton pass made it 2-12 to 1-9 with ten minutes left.  Two Sylvesters points further eroded the margin.  Next combination between Conor J O’Dwyer and Jack O’Brien allowed Barry Horan bat home his second goal.

At 3-12 to 1-11 the visitors might have felt able to relax.  A Sylvesters goal quickly shattered that illusion.  In the remaining three minutes the Crokes defence held firm confining their opposition to two wides.  With group leaders Raheny losing this 3-12 to 2-11 win gives Crokes top spot and the entitlement to a home semi.  As well as those mentioned already Paddy Tighe, whose puckouts were excellent, solid full back Brian McHenry, Conor O’Dwyer and James Murphy impressed for the victors.
