Kilmacud Crokes 3-13 –v- Faughs 4-9

Played on 23rd March 1975

According to a newspaper account:

“Dublin’s long awaited 1974 senior hurling championship final provided a surprise at Parnell Park when, the famed Faughs, fancied for their third three-in-a-row title, went down, albeit by the narrowest margin, to comparative newcomers Kilmacud-Crokes who ran out winners by 3-13 to 4-9.

As was to be expected, Faughs, so frequently the county standard bearers, went down like champions, the years eventually catching up with them.  After looking a well beaten team, two goals in the last five minutes by Joe Cunningham gave them hope, but they ran out of time in the end and Kilmacud-Crokes were worthy winners.  Cunningham was foiled also with a penalty attempt in the 23rd minute of the second half, John Mitchell, who kept a great goal, making a fine save, but it was a costly miss for the holders.

Kilmacud had much the better of the opening half and with wind advantage led 3-8 to 1-4.  During this period Brian Cooney and Danny Ryan dominated midfield.  Their supply of ball into the Faughs goal area allowed Mick Bermingham to demonstrate his competitiveness and ability – he scored 2-5 and was man of the match.  Other splendid performers for the winners were John Mitchell in goal, PJ Hough and Frank Kenny in defence, Danny Ryan and Brian Cooney at midfield and Tommy Ring and Jim Hackett in attack.

Faughs though lacking in pace, gave their all with Jim O’Donnell and Paddy Spelman strong in defence, Sean Buckley industrious at midfield, and Cunningham an opportunist in attack.”

Team: John Mitchell, Ted Dooley, PJ Hough, Brendan Murphy, Jack Gilchrist, Jim Daly, Frank Kenny, Danny Ryan, Brian Cooney, Mick Kenny, Tommy Ring, Jim Hackett, Tom McLoughlin, Mattie Fox, Mick Bermingham.  Subs:  Tom Bohan  for McLoughlin, John O’Toole, Paddy Guiney, John Hayes, Eamonn Lahart, Paddy Hogan and Tom Berkery.

Scorers:  Mick Bermingham (2-5), Jim Hackett (0-4), Tommy Ring (0-3), Mattie Fox (1-0) and Mick Kenny (0-1).
