Report Week Ending 21st August 2011

Body

Saturday 20th August 2011 saw the Dublin under 21’s emulate the minors as they defeated Antrim by 3-23 to 0-6 in the All-Ireland semi final at Newry.

The Dubs led 1-9 to 0-4 at half time.  A quick 1-3, the goal coming from Sean McGrath, after the resumption, extinguished any faint hopes the Northerners might have harboured.  Joining McGrath on the starting fifteen were Kevin O’Loughlin, who bagged six points, one a glorious sideline conversion, and defenders Bill O’Carroll and Jack Doughan.  Dublin now play Galway in Semple Stadium, Thurles, on 11th September in a repeat of the 2007 decider.  For www.hill16.ie report see HERE

To allow supporters travel to Newry two under 14 league games threw in at 11.00am.  The A’s beat Cuala at Thomastown by 2-15 to 2-4 in Division 1 with a strong team performance.  Crokes had nine different scorers and were 1-9 to 1-2 clear at the interval, the goal coming from a Darragh Butler 20 metre free.  Hurling into the wind in the second half Stevie O’Dwyer converted three frees.  A goal following a wicked deflection brought Cuala within reach but after their defence halted a storming Alex Considine run Chris Kealy drove to the net to end the contest.

Castleknock visited Silverpark for a second division tie.  The visitors dominated the opening installment and led 3-7 to 1-5 at the short whistle.  Crokes were much improved in the second half and got to within one point.  Two very late goals put a gloss on the final result (6-14 to 5-7) from the visitors’ point of view.  Cillian Fleming, Louis de Courcey, Sean Gorman and Stephen McEntee all put in a good shift.

Tuesday evening 16th August 2011 took the under 15B’s across town to Malahide to play St Sylvesters at Bridgefield in the first game of the Division 3 Top 4 series.  The concession of two goals in the ten minutes before half time put Crokes on the back foot – a situation that was in no small measure retrieved when a long range Paul Comerford free found the net just before the break, at which time the home side led 2-15 to 1-5.

Crokes narrowed the gap but had to wait for a fiftieth minute Hubert Barry goal to forge ahead.  Shortly afterwards Richard Couse found the net and the Stillorgan boys looked set for a comfortable run in.  It turned out to be anything but as Sylvesters raised a green flag and it took all the visitors’ fighting qualities to hold on for a 3-9 to 3-7 victory.

Team: K Fleming, R Geraghty, M Redmond, S Vallom, B Sultan, A Ahern, S O’Hurley, R Couse, S Rizvi, K Culligan, N Sweeny, A O’Neill, C Smyth, P Comerford, R Kennedy.  Subs: H Barry for C Smyth and K Lanigan for M Culligan (both half time).

Friday 19th August 2011 featured two games.  At Silverpark the under 16’s lost to Ballyboden in League 1 by 1-11 to 2-5.  The better team, who were more up for the game won.  Boden led by 1-6 to 0-2 at the interval and Crokes only came into it in last ten minutes.  Most prominent were Odhran O’Siochru, Eamonn Allen, Ronan Horgan and Dylan Paisley.  For pictures see HERE.  The minors travelled to O’Toole Park to play the Dublin under 17 squad in a useful challenge which the latter won by three points.

All-Ireland Hurling Sevens

To be held on Saturday 3rd September 2011 this is wonderful showcase and the main source of funds to keep hurling going in the club.  Advertising manager Declan Herlihy 087-9897175 and declanherlihy@eircom.net would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in taking a programme advertisement or who can help in any other way.

Photo Competition – Winner Announced

Many congratulations to Frances Mullin the winner of our Photo Competition.

Frances selected photograph number 7 (see below).  The winner gets to nominate any player on any Kilmacud Crokes hurling team to be the subject of a special match photographic profile.  Frances has selected her son Michael, who plays on the under 13 hurling team and will receive a special Presentation DVD of the occasion.

The competition was held to mark the fact that in a little over 20 months our Photo Gallery website – www.pix.ie/kchurling notched up more than half a million photo views! Every week more and more photos are added of matches, social events and other club activities. The facility has obviously been and continues to be a big hit.
