Report Week Ending 25th September 2011

Body

It was another very successful one with our intermediate hurlers advancing to the county final and the Junior E’s progressing to the semi final.  We are now in the middle of serious championship action.  The seniors are in quarter final action on 8th October and details of other fixtures are listed below.

Saturday 24th September 2011 took the inters to St Peregrine’s grounds in Blakestown to face Clondalkin Round Towers in the county championship semi final.  Against the wind and on a short pitch the Stillorgan team was quickly out of traps with two early points from Fergal Armstrong (free and 65).  There followed a seven minute hiatus before the flood gates opened.  Firstly Armstrong converted another free and then Alan Tiernan finished a Hugh Gannon/Donal McGovern move to the net.  At 1-3 to 0-0 it was effectively game over.  Crokes added another seven overs before half time.  Towers first score came in the thirty fifth minute to make it 1-12 to 0-1.  Four minutes later Tiernan doubled to the onion sack for the second of his hat trick.  While the scores came easily as Crokes overwhelmed their opposition and the game concluded 4-18 to 0-5, the defence also merits favourable mention for the tight rein they kept on their men and goalkeeper Richie Swetnam pulled off at least two top class saves.  Naomh Barrog are sure to provide very much stiffer opposition in the final.

Team:

R Sweetnam, A McCarthy, N Lillis, A Hopkins, ?, B Hanamy, D Byrne, D Mulligan (0-1), B O’Leidhin, C Sheehan (0-1), H Gannon, F Armstrong (0-9, f7, 65-1), A Tiernan (3-2), D McGovern (1-1), A Pilkington (0-3).  Subs:  M Coghlan (0-1) for B O’Leidhin (inj, 6 mins), S McNicholas for A Hopkins (44 mins), E O’Byrne for H Gannnon (46 mins), D de Paor for A Pilkington (46 mins) and R Mangan for A McCarthy (49 mins)

The following afternoon the Junior E’s advance to the county semi final with an 0-16 to 2-3 win over Craobh Chiarain.  Crokes were 0-9 to 0-2 clear at the break and two late goals put a gloss on it for the opposition.  Next up are Realt Dearg.  To the fore for the winners were Brendan Halpin, Adrian Crean, Ciaran McIntyre, Shane O’Keeffe and Neal Martin.

Team:

P Tighe, N McIntyre, J Huban, C McIntyre, B Halpin, A Crean, B McHenry, S Rouse, S O’Keeffe, D Brennan, J Cassidy, C McGrath, B Horan, N Martin, F Motherway.  Subs:  A Cullinane for F Motherway (inj, 20 mins), E Campion for B Horna (inj, 35 mins), M Beagon for J Cassidy (50 mins), N Salvino for A Cullinane (55 mins) and K Noctor for C McGrath (55 mins)

Deerpark was the Mecca for the under 12’s for most of Sunday as we entertained visitors from Fermoy (Cork), Erins Own (Cork) and Toomevarra (Tipperary) in a four team tournament.  At day’s end honours went to the Tipperary boys who defeated Crokes in the final, the latter having earlier accounted for both Cork sides.  Well done to all concerned.

While all this was going on the seniors travelled to Craughwell Co Galway to play the locals.  A useful challenge saw the home team win by seven points.  For photos see HERE

Etihad Airways competition, 'The Best Club Down Under'

As well as domestic honours we also pursuing a foreign prize and ask for some very quick and simple help from you.

On the initiative of one of our senior hurlers Kevin O’Loughlin, we have entered the Etihad Airways competition, 'The Best Club Down Under'.

We have been shortlisted along with three other clubs around the country for the top prize - a trip for the senior hurling team to spend a week in Australia being trained by Tipperary legend, Nicky English and culminating with a match against an Australian selection before the first test in the 2011 International Rules Series in Melbourne's 53,000-capacity Etihad Stadium! The means of picking a winner comes down to a vote.

We need everyone to vote for us via this link http://etihadgaa.ie/final_vote/ and VALIDATE YOUR VOTE by clicking on the link in the verification email that will be sent to your email address account after you have voted, before MIDNIGHT NEXT THURSDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER.

The key to our success in this is to maximize our vote by spreading the word via all available channels of communication to as many people as possible. This involves:

  • Voting yourself with every email address you have.
  • Getting your family, friends, housemates and colleagues to vote and encouraging them and their contacts to spread the word as far and as wide as possible.

Essentially, vote and then email and/or text your entire contact list to do the same.

Your help and support is earnestly requested and appreciated.
