Report Week Ending 26th June 2011

Onwards and upwards for the seniors in their AHL1 campaign with two further wins and a valiant effort by the under 14’s at the National Feile na nGael finals in Galway provided the highlights of the week.

 

Blunden Drive was the venue on Saturday evening 25th June 2011 where Crokes emerged 3-13 to 1-8 victors over O’Tooles, who finished with thirteen men.  For report see HERE  For images of this match click here or on the flashing camera!

 

As part of a double header at Silverpark on Wednesday evening 23rd June 2011 Na Fianna were the guests.  Against a strong breeze and playing into the Sunshine Home end Crokes went in at half time on par, 1-5 apiece.  After the resumption a Donal McGovern goal formed the platform for the eventual 2-10 to 1-9 win with the aforementioned Donal, Brian Hanamy, the scorer of the first half major, Ross O’Carroll, making his seasonal debut at centre back, and Aodhan de Paor most prominent. Part 2 of the double header, the intermediates AHL3 clash with St Sylvesters did not go as well.  Trailing by three points at the interval, 1-4 to 0-4, against the wind, the Stillorgan men looked in a relatively strong position.  However, they were undone by the concession of three second half goals and ultimately lost out by 4-11 to 2-7.  For report see HERE.  Redemption came swiftly and emphatically on Saturday 25th June with a 3-18 to 1-5 win over Thomas Davis at Kiltipper Road (half time 3-9 to 0-3).  For report see HERE

 

The second consecutive wet evening of the week, Tuesday 21st June 2011, produced a narrow 1-8 to 0-11 win for the Junior E’s in AHL8 at Sean Moore Park over table toppers Clanna Gael.  At the end a of low scoring first half the Ringsend men led 0-6 to 1-2.  Digging deep Crokes admirably found the wherewithal to prevail thanks to a late point from Neil Martin.  For report see HERE

 

Sunday morning saw Castleknock come for another AHL8 match.  Crokes were 2-6 to 1-5 in arrears at the break and ended 2-14 to 2-10 behind.  Best were Paddy Tighe, Ciaran O’Callaghan and Ciaran McIntyre

 

The Junior A’s played Clontarf in St Annes Park on Thursday evening.  After thirty minutes they led 2-6 to 2-4 but could not sustain the effort and went down 4-13 to 3-7.  To the fore were Paddy Igoe, Cian Gormley, Paul Ryan and Barrai Brennan. 

All adult teams this week were pressed for numbers.  Apart from the usual quota of injuries and work commitments, among the contributing factors are a significant number of club players currently on intercounty duty (four Dublin senior, five Dublin under 21 and two Dublin minor), Leaving Certificate and other examinations, student Summer travel and some (but, thankfully, not a huge number to date) enforced emigration.

 

The most active playing group of the week were the under 14A’s who played four games in the National Feile na nGael finals on Friday and Saturday 24th and 25th June 2011. Three comprehensive group wins saw them qualify for the quarter final against Na Piarsaigh of Limerick in Duggan Park Ballinasloe on Saturday. Crokes were unable to make the first half wind advantage count and eventually lost out by five points but not without putting up a great fight.  Na Piarsaigh subsequently won through to the final.

 

 

This was a fantastic adventure for our young players and it was great to see them rubbing shoulders with the best clubs in the country.  Loughrea could not have been better hosts and a most enjoyable weekend was had by all.  For more see HERE and HERE

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, for the under 14B’s, in a Silverpark downpour, the concession of two early goals proved too great an obstacle as they went down to Fingallians in Division 2 by 5-12 to 2-9.  At the break it was 2-5 to 0-6 and Crokes were much improved in the second period.  Best for the home side were Ciaran Hennessey, Martin Connor , Mattie Hogan and Jim Gibbons.

Intercounty

For the first time ever Dublin feature in minor, under 21 and senior provincial deciders in the same year as two further Leinster Finals were attained thanks to victories on Thursday 23rd over Offaly at under 21 level and over Westmeath at minor on Saturday 25th June 2011.  Kevin O’Loughlin got eleven of Dublin’s 0-21 to 0-8 winning tally against the Faithful.  Jack Doughan and Bill O’Carroll also started while Sean McGrath marked his introduction with a point.  Barry Mulligan was also part of the squad.  For www.hill16.ie report see HERE.  Oisin O’Rorke came on as a second half substitute in the minor game and scored a goal as the young Dubs prevailed 1-16 to 2-7.  For www.hill16.ie report see HERE

 

Sights are now focused on Dublin’s the respective finals with both the senior and minor deciders penciled in for Croke Park on Sunday 3rd July 2011.  In both instances Kilkenny will provide the opposition.  On 13th July the under 21’s will travel to Wexford Park to take on the Slayneysiders to determine the destination of the provincial crown
