Report Week Ending 4th September 2011

Body

Saturday 3rd September 2011 brought the usual large attendance to six venues for the 39th annual Kilmacud Crokes Copper Face Jacks All-Ireland Hurling Sevens.  An exciting day’s hurling was crowned by a superb senior final where it took extra time to separate Crokes and Kildangan, with the honours eventually going to the Tipperary side.  This was an outstanding display by our seniors and huge credit is due to them and their management team.  The full story of the final and what was a great day can be read at our dedicated website http://www.hurlingsevens.com.  In the other finals the Shield was won by Setanta (Donegal) and the under 13 title went to Sarsfields of Cork, who defeated Crokes in the semi final.

Twenty four hours later the All-Ireland senior Hurling Final saw Kilkenny gain revenge on Tipperary while in the curtain raiser the Dublin minors were second best to Galway.  Crokes Oisin O’Rorke came on in the second half and Robert Murphy was a member of the extended panel.  Well done to both on a great year.  For hill16.ie report on the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final see HERE.

While the 7’s activity was reaching a crescendo we had a number of underage teams taking the field on Saturday afternoon.  At Silverpark late spurts each half resulted in a 5-13 to 2-9 win (2-6 to 1-3 at half time) for the under 14A’s in Division 1 against St Judes.  To the fore were Cillian Fleming, Cathal Keane, Tom Fox, Stevie O’Dwyer and Fergal Whitely.  . At the same venue the under 16’s overcame Na Fianna A by 1-15 to 2-5 in the first division.  The two teams on the road had to give way, in the case of the under 14B’s to Raheny at St Annes Park (Division 2) FT 6-20 to 3-9. Against a physically stronger team we struggled up to HT (3-9 to 0-3) but a stronger performance in the second half salvaged some pride. Strong showings from Conor O'Dwyer, Aidan Healy and Donal Callagahan. The U13'Bs lsot out to St Finians in Division 4 in Rivervalley, Swords.

Sunday morning 4th September featured one game, an 0-8 to 1-3 first division victory for the under 15A’s against Cuala at Silverpark.

The same morning the under 15B’s received a walk over from Dal Cais in league 3.

The postponed and final MHL first division game against Whitehall Colmcilles proceeded in Silverpark on Friday 2nd September 2011.  There was little doubt about the outcome as the Stillorgan lads led 0-10 to 0-3 midway and were 1-22 to 0-4 ahead at the conclusion.  Caolan Conway, Conor O’Dwyer, Ross McGowan and Emmet Doherty were among the stars.

Team:

P Tighe, C MacGabhann, D Corish, J Huban, C Gormley, E Doherty, C Devins, M Geraghty, R McGowan, F Motherway, C Conway, KJ McGowan, N Gorey, B Horan, C O’Dwyer.  Subs: A Pilkington for N Gorey, K Kelly for KJ McGowan, J Murphy for C MacGabhann, C O’Neill for R McGowan and S Boyd for J Huban.

Simultaneously the under 13A’s were crossing town to play Clontarf in League 1 where they went down to the home side.

A busy Tuesday evening 30th August 2011 saw five teams in action.  Kilkenny beckoned for a minor challenge against James Stephens.  This was a worthwhile exercise which Crokes won 0-20 to 2-8 (half time 0-10 to 2-5). Fionan Motherway scored nine points from frees.

A close game in Division 1 saw the under 15A’s lose out 3-12 to 2-13 away to Whitehall Colmcilles in Ellenfield Park.  In a team that put in a good shift Sean Keating, Mark McCallion, Eoin Keane and Francis O’Reilly led the way.

The under 15B’s had their second Division 3 Top Four outing against St Judes at Silverpark.  The Tymon side opened an early four point gap.  Resolute play from Crokes broke it back to parity by the end of the first quarter.  While the possession spilt was probably even for the remainder of the half Judes troubled the score keeper more and went in 1-9 to 0-5 ahead, a lead that flattered them a little.  The second half was more even than the final scoreline of 2-17 to 2-9 might suggest although there was no doubting Judes deserved their victory.  Highlight of the night was a great 25 metre goal from John Egan.  Most prominent for Crokes were Matthew Redmond, Ruairi Geraghty, Barney Sultan Stevie O’Dwyer and Niall Sweeny.

Team:

C Fleming, R Geraghty, M Redmond, S Vallom, B Sultan, E Sheehy, S O’Hurley, R Couse, S Rizvi, S O’Dwyer, N Sweeny, K Culligan, R Kennedy, P Comerford, A Porter.  Subs: H Barry for K Culligan, J Egan for A Porter, A Liffey for S Vallom, and D Gaughran for R Kennedy.

In Division 1 the under 13A were at home St Vincents in Deerpark.  A much improved performance saw Crokes go down by two points, 2-5 to 1-10.  In what was a great team effort Oisin O’Siochru, Jack Gallagher, Michael Mullin and Michael Roche were most prominent.  The B’s played Round Towers at Moyle Park in the fourth division with the honours going to the home side.  For report on the A game see HERE

The previous night (Monday 29th August 2011) the intermediates hosted Rathmolyon of Meath for a challenge.
