Weekend 24/25 February 2007

The weekend of 24/25 February 2007 heralded the earnest start of the 2007 hurling campaign.

On Saturday, in Deerpark, the under 11’s and under 12’s played Lucan in Deerpark.  The under 11’s, with over 30 players, were well superior to their opponents in one game and just lost out in the other.  Afterwards the under 12’s swamped the westsiders.

On Sunday the under 13’s got their season off to a good start with two games against the Laois Development squad in Silverpark.

The first game was the tighter contest with Crokes having had the advantage of a strong wind going in 2-0 to 1-1 at half time.  The second half was a real ding dong contest with Crokes all the time keeping their noses ahead until a late surge saw the Laois boys gain parity.  In the final minutes either side could have won it but spoils shared was a fair result on the day. The second match gave the spectators every bit as interesting a game although the Crokes boys proved too strong for their midland opponents.  Again Crokes played with the first half advantage and might have been further ahead at the break.  The resumption saw the expected Laois fightback and it took some excellent close play to maintain the margin.  All through the Crokes tackling and harassing was of a high standard and the winning margin was well deserved.

Later in the day the under 14’s played a challenge against Lucan.  In a game where the wind played a big role Crokes put in a good second half performance but were unable to bridge the first half gap.
