Crokes grind out result against resolute Vincents

Although it had rained incessantly all day, by 6pm (throw-in) the sun was shining and it was a fine and bright evening for hurling.

The match was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of former Vincents, UCD and Dublin stalwart Dave Billings, who died recently.

Crokes were first out of the blocks and had recorded 4 overs, including a placed free by Oisin O Rorke, by the time Vincents managed their first score - a pointed free - after almost 11 minutes. Vincents upped the tempo and, as the short whistle loomed, they had come within a point of parity. It required two very late injury time points by Ryan O Dwyer for Crokes to finish the half 3 points to the good; 0-09 to 0-06.

After the break Crokes quickly popped over three points, courtedy of the O'Carroll brother and Denaie McGrath, with only a single reply from Vincents. On eight minutes Ryan O Dwyer scored a fine individual goal. This was followed up by a further brace of points by Bill O'Carroll and Oisin O'Rorke before Vincents managed only their second over of the half - after almost 18 minutes. However, they then scored a further 4 points without reply and there was almost 25 minutes on the clock before the Stillorgan men scored again - a long range point from Damien Kelly. Both teams traded scores from then until the end, leaving Crokes victors by 5 points, 1-17 to 0-15.
