Seniors v Castlecomer

Body

A slow start playing into the wind and rain left Crokes with an uphill challenge in the 2nd round of the Leinster Senior Hurling League against Castlecomer on Monday 13th April 2009.

Against a well drilled Castlecomer team, Crokes opened tentatively and within ten minutes trailed by 1-3 to 0-1.  With Aodhan de Paor increasingly dominating from centre back, and Peter Clinton playing an effective roving role around midfield,. Crokes became more competitive and a succession of points from Eoin de Paor, a free from Fergal Armstrong and an excellent pointed line ball from Kevin O'Loughlin ensured that Crokes reached the half time whistle only 6 points in arrears (1-8 to 0-5). The concession of some soft frees allowing Castlecomer to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

With the wind and rain in their backs for the second half, Crokes were expected to take the game to their opponents. However the concession of two soft goals primarily due to defensive lapses effectively killed off the match. Crokes needed goals and although a number of good chances were created, none were converted. In the end Crokes could only muster 4 second half points and Castlecomer were convincing winners as they prepare for their opening championship match in a fortnight.

Next up for Crokes is an away clash with Rapparees from Wexford on Wednesday 22nd, throw in at 7pm.
