SORCHA KEANE-BRESLIN
1993 - 2012

Just after ten o’clock on Saturday night, July 14, Sorcha Keane-Breslin was called home to her eternal reward. She leaves behind her broken-hearted parents Helen and Leonard, and brother Cathal. She was nineteen years old.

Sorcha was first diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2010 and from that day to the last moments of her life on Saturday, she never gave an outward sign that her spirit had been diminished by the diagnosis. Sorcha often described herself as, “living with cancer” and it was clear that for Sorcha, the key word was, living.

Despite her illness and the disruption to her education, she sat her Leaving Certificate examination and achieved a great result, and so, with the high points gained, she started in Trinity College in Autumn 2011.

Attending University and coping with a very serious illness was never going to be easy but as with everything else, it didn’t deter Sorcha.

She entered into university life with gusto and enthusiasm, relishing every moment in lectures, with friends and, to the extent possible, enjoying the social life that is part and parcel of being at college.

From the start of 2012, her cancer began to take a greater toll on her life but amidst it all, Sorcha kept smiling, never gave any hint of giving in and became a true inspiration to all those around her. In May, her health took a very serious turn for the worse and after being admitted to hospital, it seemed more than once that it was over. But even at those worst moments, Sorcha’s indomitable spirit pulled her through and after seven weeks, she walked out of hospital and returned home, to the true joy of Helen and Leonard and her beloved brother, Cathal.

And so, in these past weeks, Sorcha’s spirit of “living” with cancer continued and carried her through good days and not so good days. In her last week, the family went to Galway on Thursday to see a film project that Cathal had worked on. She was so proud to see Cathal’s work. It was memorable for all four of them and the journey back on Friday was described by Cathal as, “great craic” and will always hold special memories due to the day that followed.

On Saturday morning, Sorcha was ill and this became much worse as the morning progressed, with the result that she had to be admitted to hospital once more and went into St Vincent’s Private Hospital that afternoon. The medical staff made her comfortable and within hours, she was in a deep and peaceful sleep. At about ten past ten that evening, the Good Lord called Sorcha home and she breathed her last, surrounded by those she had loved in life and who loved her.

At nineteen years, it was a life that was far too short but in those short and precious nineteen years, Sorcha has left her own legacy, she has made a difference for her family, her friends, and for the parish of Mount Argus through her active participation in the life of the parish and especially, her contribution to music in our liturgies.

As a parish, we send our deepest sympathy to her mother Helen, her father Leonard and to her brother, whom she loved so dearly, Cathal.

Today, the parish has a very special friend in heaven.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
