Crokes Too Strong for St Mary’s Clonmel

On their third foray to south Kilkenny the Crokes under 12 hurlers overcame St Mary’s of Clonmel by 10-4 to 3-2 in the Carrigeen all weather ten a side tournament.  The scoreline does not tell the full story.  While overall Crokes were the better team the game was up for grabs until the final few minutes.

A lot of attacking in the first ten minutes provided just a single point to Kilmacud and when St Mary’s goaled it looked like the lack of return might tell.  Credit to the Crokes youngsters who quickly put the setback behind them and managed to go in 3-2 to 1-0 at half time.

Two early Crokes goals after the interval seemed to put daylight between the teams.  This time it was the turn of the Clonmel team to fight back.  This they did with admirable endeavour turning the next fifteen minutes into a dogged contest and scoring two goals in the process.  The Crokes cause was helped by some good breakaway scores from Caolan Conway and Neil Gorey who put in a great battling performance.  Cian Gormley was also moving well and very unlucky with one superb shot on the run.  The move of KJ McGowan to midfield, where Oisin O’Rorke was performing sublimely, helped stem the onslaught and it was only in the final few minutes that Crokes tacked on the scores to put a sheen on the result.

Throughout goalkeeper, Cian MacGabhann, commanded his line and made some crucial saves.  The leadership provided by full backs Conor Sweeny and Daibhid Corish was exceptional.  They were ably assisted by Conor O’Dwyer.  James Murphy stuck to his man and Matthew Geraghty put in a very good second half performance while Conor O’Byrne was also prominent.  As has become commonplace on these trips the travelling party again left for home overwhelmed by the hospitality of our hosts and our gratitude to them.
