Dubs push Cork all the way

The concession of a soft goal eight minutes into the second half cost Dublin dearly in the All-Ireland SHC qualifier in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday afternoon against Cork.  At the time Dublin had fought their way back into the game and trailed 0-10 to 0-8.  While the final score was 1-17 to 0-15 in favour of the Leesiders this was a game from which Dublin can take much heart and provides a good platform for the coming year.  As they did throughout the championship campaign, Crokes three representatives, Niall Corcoran, James Burke and Ross O’Carroll acquitted themselves well with Corcoran described by Micheal O’Muicheartaigh as having an All-Star like outing while O’Carroll notched three points and Burke took the battle to Cork.  For report click  HERE

Seniors defeat Cuala

2008_0710_Seniors_Cuala 087w.jpg On Thursday 10th July in Silverpark, minus the Dublin contingent and some others, the seniors maintained their good league form with a 4-10 to 2-12 victory over local rivals Cuala.  On a wet and windy evening Crokes started well and put over three early points from Eoin Fitzgerald (2 frees) and Shea Gillen into the wind. Cuala then got into their stride and put over two of their own before finding the net from close range. With their tails up Cuala quickly added a point and another goal to Crokes' two further points (a Fitzgerald free and Barry O'Rorke from play) to lead 2-3 to 0-5 after fifteen minutes. Five more points were added by the visitors before half time but a good pull from Hugh Gannon to the net and a scrambled goal from Donal McGovern plus further points by Fitzgerald (free) and Barry O'Rorke left the score 2-8 to 2-5 at the break.

The two O'Loughlins were introduced for the injured Adrian Grogan and Shane O'Rorke for the second half.  Kevin immediately scored a fine point from play and Fitzgerald, now out at centre forward, added another free.  The Cuala keeper then let a long shot drop to the net to put Crokes two points ahead.  The lead was never relinquished.  With five minutes to go Shea Gillen capped a fine display by finishing well with crisp ground strike to the keeper's right. This effectively finished the match and although Cuala pressed hard for a goal in the dying minutes the Crokes backs stood firm.

Team: Richie Sweetnam, Willie Ryan, Dave Mahony, Eoin De Paor, Adrian Grogan, Rory O'Carroll, Daibhi De Paor, Shane O'Rorke, Barry O'Rorke (0-2), Mick Dalton (1-0), Hugh Gannon (1-1), Conor Clinton, Donal McGovern (1-1), Eoin Fitzgerald (0-5), Shay Gillen (1-1). Subs: Rob O'Loughlin for Grogan (inj) - 25 mins, Kevin O'Loughlin for S O'Rorke (inj) - half time.

U12 do well in Erins Isle

On Saturday the under 12’s came away from the Alan Cregan Tournament in Erins Isle as Shield winners.  In their Cup group they faced Naas, Whitehall Colmcilles and St. Brigids.  The Shield quarter and semi finals saw them overcome Lucan and Bray Emmets respectively before accounting for St Brigids in the final by four points with Daniel Coakley getting the late insurance goal.

Juniors in midweek action

On Tuesday both Junior teams were in league action.  The Junior C3’s entertained Whitehall Colmcilles in Silverpark.  At the end of a close entertaining game Crokes game away with the points on a 2-7 to 1-7 scoreline.  Thanks to an Ian O’Keeffe goal the home team led 1-4 to 0-3 at the break.  Within three minutes of the resumption the northsiders had raised a green flag.  However, a minute later an Eddie Brennan like strike from the falling Barry Gavigan cancelled out the Whitehall effort.  From then on it was nip and tuck with the Crokes men doing enough to stay ahead.  Among the Kilmacud stars were Nick Canny, who caught everything that came his way in goal, Hugh Liston, Niall McIntyre, who kept a tight rein on the Whitehall danger man, Mark Donnelly and Padraig Doheny.

Team: N Canny, R Egan, H Liston, P Byrne, J Egan, M Donnelly, N McIntyre, P Doheny, D Murphy, F O’Connor, Declan O’ Dwyer, S O’Keeffe, I O’Keeffe, B Gavigan, Donal O’Dwyer.  Subs: F Fortune for Donal O’Dwyer, J Galvin for Declan O’ Dwyer, F Meyer for F Fortune, F Saunders

The Junior B’s went to Clonshaugh to play Craobh Chiaran and came out the wrong end of a 2-14 to 2-10 result.  The game was close throughout first half.  Just on half-time Ciarans scored 1-1 to take a five point lead after playing into the wind (half time 1-7 to 0-5).  Points were traded in early part of second half until after ten minutes the home team scored a soft kicked goal that put them nine points clear.  This prompted a Crokes revival and three good frees from Adrian Crean reduced the deficit.  Chiarans popped over a few more before Colm Crowley forced the ball over the line from close range.  Again Chiarans responded with a point from play.  With seven minutes left David Stafford reduced the margin to three with another well taken goal. Crokes peppered the Chiarans goal from then on and were unlucky not to snatch a draw. Ciarans closed out the game in the final seconds with an insurance point from play.  Best for Crokes were A.Crean, JR Hunt, A.Byrne and D. Staunton.

Team: C. Maher, P. Ryan, M. Regan, N. Hall, S. Canny, A Byrne, D. Staunton, C. Duggan, C. Sheehan, C. Condon, J.R. Hunt, S. Lambe, C. Crowley, A. Crean, J. Scanlon.

Subs: D. Stafford for Scanlon, P. Byrne for Sheehan (inj).

Scorers: A.Crean (0-7), C. Condon (0-2), JR. Hunt (0-1), C.Crowley (1-0), D. Stafford (1-0)

2008_0713_J5_CivlService 253w.jpgThe Juniors B’s were out again on Sunday – in championship action against Civil Service at Silverpark.  Crokes had the better of the early exchanges until a sixteenth minute point put the visitors ahead, 0-4 to 0-3.  Niall Butler’s third conversion from the placed ball levelled soon after.  The same player gave Crokes the lead from another free and when Shane Canny added a point to Conor Sheehan’s twenty third minute goal the home team were 1-6 to 0-4 ahead.  A disputed Service goal was (most thought the ball had gone wide before being played back in) prefaced two points for the bureaucrats and the sides were level.  Ciaran O’Grady pointed to put Crokes ahead.  The lead changed when the visitors raised two white flags only for Colm Duggan to equalise.  Another Service point edged them one ahead at the break although the referee had it 1-9 to 1-7.  His was the scoreline that mattered.

The visitors got the first score of the second half and then three Butler frees and a score from play by Conor Sheehan brought parity.  Nearly ten minutes were to pass before the next score, a Service over.  Over the next five minutes two more followed.  In the fifty seventh minute Service goaled and led 2-14 to 1-11.  A goal from a twenty metre free by Butler straight after gave Crokes hope but that proved to be the final score and Crokes ended up on the wrong side of a 2-14 to 2-11 outcome after a game they probably shaded territorially and possession wise.  Among the star performers in a whole hearted Kilmacud team were Dara Lyndon, Fergus Monnelly, Aidan Byre, Dave Canny, Peter Clinton, Conor Sheehan, Ciaran O’Grady and Niall Butler.

Team: D Lyndon, P. Ryan, J Byrne, F Monnelly, P Clinton, D. Canny, A Byrne, C Crowley, C. Duggan (0-1), C. Sheehan (1-2), J.R. Hunt, C O’Grady (0-1), S Canny (0-1), N Butler (1-7, all frees), C Maher.  Subs: S Lambe for C Maher, D. Stafford for S Canny, P Kennedy for C Duggan, K Noctor, P Byrne, B Sheehan, D Staunton.

Intermediates beaten by Vincents, while Minors win

j0223791.gif Wednesday provided two games against St Vincents.  The Intermediates had a losing trip to Pairc Naomh Uinseann.  In Silverpark the minors qualified for the final of the Summer league by accounting for the Marino men.  Goals win games and conversions by Kevin O’Loughlin (3), Brian Hanamy and Naomhan O’Riordain provided the foundation for a 5-9 to 1-9 victory.  Others to star were Daire Brennan, in goal, Donal Monnelly, Andrew Whelan, Killian Motherway and Niall Mulligan who scored a wonderful long range point late in the second half.  The final against Na Fianna will probably be played during the coming week.
