Crokes on Tour!

At 8.00am some 200 boys from under 12 down to under 8 assembled in Glenalbyn for the annual Kilmacud Crokes on Tour – for the second year in a row to five Tipperary venues.  Five buses and a fleet of cars transported the travelling party to their destinations.  Blessed with glorious sunshine a fantastic day was had by all, with games as follows:

U12 –v- Emeralds of Urlingford and Holycross Ballycahill

U11 –v- Durlas Og (2 teams)

U10 –v- Toomevarra (2 teams)

U9   -v- Drom & Inch and Nenagh Eire Og (both at Drom & Inch)

U8   -v- Emeralds of Urlingford

The group then re-assembled for a meal at the Anner Hotel in Thurles and afterwards proceeded to Semple Stadium for the Tipperary –v- Limerick National Hurling league match before returning tired but happy to the club.  Many thanks to our generous host clubs Durlas Og, Drom & Inch, Holycross, Urlingford (Tipperary for the day for Crokes purposes) and Toomevarra for treating everyone so well.

Intermediates win in Tipp

The intermediates also headed for Co. Tipperary for a challenge against Ballingarry before taking in the Dublin –v- Kilkenny National Hurling League tie in Nowlan Park.  This was a useful pipe opener before Tuesday night’s upcoming championship game away to Craobh Chiaran and ended with a 2-20 to 0-12 victory (half time 1-9 to 0-3).  Among the more prominent performers were Declan Browne, Hugh Gannon, Niall Mulligan and Barra O’Leidhin.

Team: R Tighe, S McNicholas, D Byrne, G McMorrow, N Lillis, D Browne, N Mulligan. H Gannon, C Brugha, F Monnelly, D McGovern, B O’Leidhin, A Hopkins, S Gillen, K Dalton.  Subs (all used): S Canny, D Staunton, JR Hunt

Minors

On the home front the minor A’s beat Erins Isle, 3-13 to 1-9 in Finglas in Division 1 of the league.  This was a good battling performance against a tough physical Isles team.  A tight first half with both sets of backs on top ended with Crokes ahead 1-6 to 1-4.  The second half resumed as the first ended until Sean McGrath goaled for the second time in the forty third minute.  From then on Crokes started to dominate although the final result was not as emphatic or comfortable the result might suggest.  Best for Crokes were Cian O’Brien, Jack Doughan, Barry Mulligan, Mark O’Dwyer and Sean McGrath.

Team: Eoin Dalton, Cian O’Brien, Cillian Doherty, Paul Collins, Sean Murphy, Jack Doughan, Gary Melican, Eddie O’Byrne, Barry Mulligan (0-2, s/line-1), Dillon Mulligan, Naomhan O’Reardon (1-0), Darren McVeigh (0-2), Eoin O’Dwyer, Sean McGrath (2-7, f-4), Mark O’Dwyer (0-2).  Subs:  Nico Salvino for E O’Dwyer (36 mins), Thomas Clarke for D Mulligan (45 mins),

In Division 3 of the league the minor B’s lost to Scoil Ui Chonaill at Clontarf Road by 2-9 to 0-8.  The Kilmacud lads led by a point at half time but found a strong wind in the second period difficult to cope with.  To the fore were Jonathon Healy-Hayes, Stephen Beale, Niall Murphy and Brian McHenry.

Junior B's win in Faughs

On Saturday the Junior B’s traveled to Tymon Park to play Faughs in a challenge, winning 5-11 to 3-11 with staring performances from Conor Sheehan, Jonathon Healy-Hayes and Niall Hall.  The team faces Erins Isle in the championship in Finglas on Wednesday evening while the Junior E’s host Na Fianna in Silverpark in the JHC5 on Thursday.  All support welcomed for these games.

Dogged Dubs dig deep against Cats

In Sunday’s National Hurling League Division 1 tie at Nowlan Park Dublin produced a dogged second half performance before going doing 1-23 to 3-15 to Kilkenny.  Crokes Niall Corcoran manfully played his part in a performance indicating the county’s graph continues to rise.  Check for a full report on the Hill16 site - www.hill16.ie

Punchestown Corporate Race Day

The new Hurling Arena in Glenalbyn was built at a cost of €500,000 and is a huge addition to hurling in the club.  It is entirely funded by the Hurling Section and we still have some way to go.  Regular users will have noticed some recent additions such as the installation of external lights, enhanced door security and cameras.

Our sixth annual Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Corporate Race Day takes place in Punchestown on Tuesday 28th April 2009 and proceeds go towards the cost of the Arena.  All previous Punchestown Race Days have been extremely successful both financially and as social events.  Anybody who has attended will well and truly vouch for the brilliant day out it is.

While we have got fantastic support from within and without the club, we still have some way to go to clear the debt and this year we are asking each team to support the Race Day on Tuesday 28th April next by organising a group (e.g. players, mentors, parents, partners, supporters) to take a table.   Please contact your team mentor to book a place.  This will make a real difference to the bottom line, really make a club day out of it and help integrate the various hurling strands within the club.   Donations or spot prizes are of course also very welcome.

Parental Assistance

We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Niall Corcoran, Club hurling coach, 087 983 4287, niall.corcoran@gmail.com

Michael Crowe, Chairman, Juvenile Hurling Group, 087-9967608, mjcrowe@gofree.indigo.ie

Quote from Parent

“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved.  And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career!  Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
