Week Ending 21st June 2009

Body

The monkey is off the back!  Dublin’s 0-18 to 1-13 victory over Wexford in the Leinster Hurling Championship semi final on Sunday 21st June 2009 at Nowlan Park saw the county through to the Leinster final for the first time since 1991.

Four club groups and many followers traveled for the game and gave enthusiastic support throughout a nail biting clash where the issue was in doubt right to the finish.  Wexford opened the scoring.  Dublin were well on top for much of the first half yet went in only four points ahead, 0-11 to 0-7.  The Dubs scored first in the second half before a Wexford scoring spree brought them to parity.  The metropolitans regained the initiative and went three clear.  With the finishing line in sight Wexford brought it back to one but Dublin held their nerve to secure what may well turn out to be a landmark victory.  For match report click HERE.  On the field Niall Corcoran played a starring role while Richard Stakelum was a vital contributor to the management team and team doctor Chris Thompson also played his part.

Before the game the under 8’s and under 10’s were guests on Erins Own in Castlecomer while the under 11’s brought two squads to Dicksboro, drawing the “A” game and winning the “B” encounter well.  The under 12’s visited O’Loughlin Gaels and after three intense periods of twenty minutes hurling the game ended 1-14 to 2-5 in favour of the locals.  For report check back later.

Back at home, a minor selection went down to the Wicklow minor team in a Sunday morning challenge at Silverpark. For a report click HERE

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday 16th June 2009, a below par performance saw the under 15’s suffer a 2-13 to 2-10 Division 1 league defeat at the hands of Lucan Sarsfields in Silverpark.  Although Crokes led 1-6 to 1-3 at the break they could never shake off their opponents who regained the lead in the fiftieth minute and whose perseverance was rewarded with two deserved points.  Best for the vanquished were the full back trio of Mark Collins, Oran O’Siochru and Conor J O’Dwyer, as well as Oisin O’Rorke, Conor Devins and Michael O’Dwyer.

Team: C MacGabhann, CJ O’Dwyer, O O’Siochru, M Collins, L O’Sullivan, C O’Dwyer, J Murphy, M McNicholas, O O’Rorke, C Devins, D Corish, M Herlihy, M O’Dwyer, C Conway, N Gorey.  Subs: E Allen for M McNicholas, M O’Loughlin for M Herlihy, D O’Murchu for J Murphy, D Kane for L O’Sullivan

On Thursday 18th June, 2009 the under 16’s went to Porterstown for a Division 1 encounter with 2007 All-Ireland Feile na nGael Champions, Castleknock.  A very good first half display had Crokes 2-4 to 2-2 in he lead at the break.  By the fortieth minute it was 2-8 to 2-5 butt the concession of goals in quick succession changed the complexion of the game and the home team eventually won 6-10 to 2-8.  On an evening where several Crokes players had good moments most impressive were Ken Kelly, Niall Hanley and Emmet Doherty.

Team: P Tighe, C O’Dwyer, D Corish, J Clinton, O O’Carroll, E Doherty, S Moran, A Pilkington, C O’Neill, F Motherway, J Cassidy, N Hanley, N Gorey, A Cullinane, K Kelly.  Subs: C Conway for N Gorey, N Gorey for F Motherway, F Motherway for A Cullinane.

Parental Assistance

We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Niall Corcoran, Club hurling coach, 087 983 4287, niall.corcoran@gmail.com

Michael Crowe, Chairman, Juvenile Hurling Group, 087-9967608, mjcrowe@gofree.indigo.ie

Margaret Keane, Registrar, 086 311 0020, Margaret.keane@yahoo.ie

Quote from Parent

“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved.  And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career!  Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
