Boden defeat Crokes in MHL1

unday Morning in Silver Park saw the Minor A team take on neighbours Ballyboden in a close encounter which was hard fought. The home side were without some county players but never failed to match the intensity and drive of the Rathfarnham lads from start to finish. The scoring opened with frees from Caolan Conway and tentatively Crokes held a one point lead, as the sides traded points in a battle for supremacy. Caolan scored all points from centre forward in the first 20 minutes but was ably supported on his wings by Barry Horan and Ross McGowan.  In midfield Crokes were winning the breaking balls, with Matthew Geraghty and KJ McGowan giving as good as they got and - despite putting a few good balls in to the forward line of Donal Keane, Neil Gorey and Conor O’Dwyer - Crokes were very unlucky not to get a goal, with opportunities being frustrated by a very good Ballyboden defence.

The Stillorgan lads were unlucky to concede a goal just before half time, when the ball trickled in to the corner of Mike Herlihy’s net, in a run against play, as the otherwise resilient defence of Daibhid Corish, Mark McCallion and Donnacha O’Murchu had managed to quell every Boden attack. This left us down 2 points at the break and with the restart the home side were quickly back on top, with frees from Caolan Conway bringing us a point up half through the second half.

The breaking ball was still being won gallantly in the midfield ably supported at centre back by county goalkeeper Cian MacGabhann, Cian Gormley and James Murphy and a couple of runs from Barry Horan and Caolan Conway now playing full forward were thwarted yet again by the Boden defence and left us without a return for our invested effort. The Boden lads managed to point two frees and, with another minor score from play, this put them in front again, with ultimately the clock working against the home side, to leave the visitors with the win by 2 points.

This being the first defeat of the league campaign – there is no harm knowing the work that is needed to maintain a winning streak.
