Report Week Ending 24th October 2010
Those able to tri-locate on a bright sunny Sunday (24th October 2010) saw the minor A’s march on to the county championship final and the seniors and minor B’s bow out at the penultimate stage.
The seniors never got out of traps against St Vincents in Parnell Park. They were four points in arrears after eight minutes. A third of the way through the game they trailed 1-5 to 0-4. What in hindsight proved to be the decisive scores came between minutes twenty four and eight, two points, a goal and a point, all to Vincents. A well taken Kevin O’Loughlin 20 metre free gave the Stillorgan side hope but this was dented by the concession of another point before the short whistle that saw the teams go in 2-9 to 1-6. The Marino team powered ahead on the resumption and were 3-14 to 1-6 clear on the three quarter mark. The remainder of the game continued the trend and concluded 3-18 to 1-8 in favour of Vincents. Midday marked the throw in for the minor A semi final at O’Toole Park against Castleknock. The latter were first to score with a pointed free. By the fourth minute they had forged 1-1 to 0-1 clear. An Alex Pilkington goal immediately leveled. Four unanswered points, three from placed balls by the unerring Ken Kelly, and an Oisin O’Rorke goal pushed the Stillorgan lads 2-6 to 1-2 clear by the nineteenth minute. Four overs for Crokes to five for Castleknock made the half time score 2-10 to 1-7.
Any inclination for Crokes to rest on their laurels was dispelled as Castleknock, with county minor Ciaran Kilkenny now operating to great effect at full forward, opened the second period with three quick white flags. Two Ken Kelly frees sandwiched two points for the losers. The respite was short lived. First a Castleknock effort hit the post and travelled across the face of the goal before eventually being worked free. Then they scored three points before Ken Kelly again stepped up to the mark to make it 2-13 to 1-15 after forty nine minutes. Straight away Kilkenny equalised. In the fifty fifth minute the wing forward put Croke back in front, 2-14 to 1-16. The West County boys leveled and then pulled ahead. That looked to be it for Crokes but not so. The mightily impressive Jude Sweeny restored parity in the fifty ninth minute. A minute over time Ken Kelly pointed his seventh free. Mark O’Dwyer, who scored two fine overs of his own, won the puck out and found Jude Sweeny. The centre forward put the icing on the cake and finished the Crokes scoring at 2-17 to 1-18. Castleknock attacked again and were rewarded with a point but it was not enough as the Kilmacud side advanced to the final by 2-17 to 1-19. Throughout Ken Kelly and Jude Sweeny met and exceeded expectations, Mark O’Dwyer had a particularly fine first half, Enda Grogan was solid at centre back and Dillon Mulligan put himself about to good effect. The minor championship C semi against Ballyboden was played in Silverpark with an 11.00 am start. The visitors, who started nine under 16’s to the home sides five, were first to score. Jamie Clinton complimented his great catch from a puck out with an equally impressive point to level in the fifth minute. By twice that time Boden were ahead 0-4 to 0-1. Crokes were back on terms by the eighteenth minute, 0-4 apiece. The Firhouse Road side outscored Crokes two to one to lead 0-6 to 0-5 at half time.
Just as they did in the first half Crokes were unable to convert goal scoring chances in the second installment. Boden had the better of the exchanges and were more adept at taking their chances. A fifty second minute goal effectively sealed the game. Crokes did goal late on but it was not enough as the contest finished 1-11 to 1-7. Among Crokes better performers were Jamie Clinton, Fionan Motherway, Conor O’Dwyer and Kevin James McGowan.

A meeting for parents of new boys who have recently started at the Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Nursery was held in Glenalbyn on Tuesday September 28th. At the meeting Hurling Coach Niall Corcoran outlined the coaching aims that we are trying to achieve within the nursery as well as outlining how the hurling nursery is structured. We got a good response from parents that were willing to help out in the nursery, which is crucial to the success of the nursery.
We would encourage anybody who is interested in giving a hand out at the nursery to make him or herself known to Niall or the head coach organising a particular skills station on the morning.
When parents and children arrive in the morning, Marion will be taking the registration for both the 2005 & 2004 groups. If anybody is in a position to help with registration please make yourself known to Marion at the start of the session.
