Report Week Ending 3rd April 2011

Body

There is a pep in Dublin Hurling’s step following Saturday evening’s exciting and well merited draw with Kilkenny in the Allianz League at Croke Park in which three Crokes men played significant on field parts.  The feel good factor continued at club level with the seniors’ Sunday morning 4-12 to 4-4 AHL1 win over Craobh Chiaran at Silverpark.  This match also featured the first interval mini games for our stars of the future.  Tipperary’s afternoon comprehensive win over Galway, placing Dublin right back in the hunt for a National Hurling League final place, crowned matters.

From the off, on possession and territorial advantage, there could be little doubt over the AHL1 win but ten minutes in the scoreboard told a different story as the Donneycarney men led 2-0 to 0-3.  The scene changed on the quarter mark when a good run by Kevin O’Loughlin set up Barry Mulligan.  The full forward’s effort was thwarted before the in rushing Mark Coghlan swept to the net.  Between then and the short whistle Crokes added four overs to no reply.

Click here for match report and photos! The previous Tuesday 29th March 2011 Crokes picked up two Leinster Senior League points against Blackwater of Wexford on in a “home” game played at Bray Emmets.  Our thanks to the local club for allowing the use of their facilities.  The Stillorgan men had the upper hand in the first thirty minutes and forged 0-9 to 0-3 clear.  Despite scoring first after the restart Crokes loosened their grip and with ten minutes remaining the lead was much eroded at 0-12 to 0-10.  A scoring blitz, starting with an excellent point from Shane O’Rorke and quickly followed by goals from Barry Mulligan and Kevin O’Loughlin, eased the nerves and saw foireann Kilmacud home by 2-13 to 0-11.  For report see HERE

Back to Sunday John Paul Park was the venue for the Junior A’s AHL5 tie with a much improved Naomh Fionnbarra side who will take points in this league.  At half time Crokes led 1-8 to 0-9 before the game ended even Steven, 1-12 to 0-15.  Midfielder Ger Geoghegan shone as did corner back Liam Cantwell.  Conor Caulfield scored four points from play while Barrai Brennan, playing at full back, scored the goal from an eighty yard free.

The scheduled AHL8 game for the Junior E’s did not materialise as Raheny have withdrawn from the competition.

The under 14A’s had a well worthwhile lunchtime assignment with Dicksboro of Kilkenny in Silverpark.  With the wind Crokes had the better of the first half and were 3-2 to 1-4 to the good.  For a while during the second act it seemed the kittens might kick on but, displaying a commendable resilience, the Crokes boys stuck to the task and were rewarded with 1-1 in the closing five minutes before the encounter ended 4-8 to 4-5 in the visitors favour.

Team: C Keane, R Hayes, M O’Rourke, C Kelly, S McEntee, D Butler, E Sheehy, F O’Connor, A Tuck, F Tucker, S O’Dwyer, F Whitely, C O’Cleirigh, A Considine. M Roche.  Subs:  T Fox for A Tuck, C Kealy for M Roche, C Fleming for F Tucker and J Maher for C Kelly

The intermediates started the weekend in fine style, thanks to a 1-13 to 1-5 AHL3 win over Clanna Gael.  Crokes had ceded home advantage and agreed to bring the game forward by two days.  Midway, after an intense first half, it looked as if the Kilmacud men had failed to capitalise on the aid of a strong cross wind as the teams were tied 0-5 to 1-2.  The Irishtown side were next to score and while Crokes were again level after forty minutes anyone who left at that point could not have predicted the eventual outcome.  A great run by Mark Coghlan saw him off load to Daithi de Paor.  For a moment it looked as if the veteran full forward had taken too much out of the ball but no and the Clan net rippled.  From there Crokes powered on winning every battle on the field and garnering their first league points of the year.  For report see HERE

Midday Saturday had the minor B’s and the under 14B’s respectively facing up to their Ballygalget Co Down A counterparts. Useful workouts concluded with home wins.  Afterwards the guests were treated to homemade fare in brilliant sunshine before setting off for the Croke Park double header.

Minor B Team: M Herlihy, M Collins, A Colclough, O O’Carroll, G Buckley, D Corish, S Boyd, N Hanley, C O’Dwyer, D Keane, J Huban, E Campion, A Cullinane, J Cassidy, R Conlon.  Subs used; C McIntyre, P Tighe, C O’Byrne, C Gormley.

Click here for Hill 16 match reportThe earlier brilliant sunshine was replaced by several heavy showers during the course of Saturday evening’s Allianz League Division 1 encounter between Dublin and Kilkenny at Croke Park.  At the end of a compelling game in which three Crokes men, Niall Corcoran, Ryan O’Dywer and Ronan Walsh, made significant contributions the spoils were shared 1-17 to 3-11.  Thanks to a last gasp equaliser Dublin got their year back on track following the previous week’s disappointment against Galway and set off for their week long Portuguese training camp in good heart.  For www.hill16.ie report see HERE
