Week Ending 26th April 2009
Intermediates v Cr. Chiarain
Tuesday 21st April got us off to a good start with a 2-12 to 2-7 win for the intermediates over Craobh Chiaran in Clonshaugh in the opening round robin championship game.
The homesters had the first point. Donal McGovern levelled in the third minute. Over the course of the next twenty minutes or so Crokes were dominant in nearly all areas of the field and led 1-7 to 0-3. The foot was then taken off the pedal and Craobh allowed back into the game. With a minute remaining in the half the Kilmacud team still lead by eight points, 1-11 to 0-3. A goal just before the break brought the Donnycarney team right back into it.
Chiarans outscored the visitors by three points to one in the first ten minutes of the second period. A point from substitute Peter Clinton presaged a Hugh Gannon point and an excellently finished goal from Donal McGovern to give Crokes a 2-11 to 1-6 lead by the forty fifth minute. In the remaining quarter, which saw a Craobh player red carded, each side added a point. In what was an encounter that became more physical as it progressed, Crokes young quintet of Shane McNicholas, Gary McMorrow, Shea Gillen, Kevin O’Loughlin and Barra O’Leidhin impressed as did their more senior colleagues Declan Browne, Hugh Gannon and Donal McGovern.
Team: R Tighe, S McNicholas, D Byrne, G McMorrow, N Lillis, D Browne, N Mulligan, S Gillen, C Brugha, B O’Leidhin (0-1), H Gannon (0-1), K O’Loughlin (1-7, f-6, 65-1), A Hopkins, D McGovern (1-2), K Dalton. Subs: P Clinton (0-1) for A Hopkins (half time), R Mangan for N Mulligan (35 mins), E de Paor for C Brugha (40 mins), C Sheehan, F Monnelly, T O’Sullivan, S Canny, D McSweeney, A McCarthy, D McVeigh, L Bourke and D Burke
Junior B’s beat Erin’s Isle
The Junior B’s also opened their championship (JHCB2) account with an away win against Erins Isle on Wednesday evening (22nd April 2009). The first quarter see-sawed with Crokes opening up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead and then the Finglas men replying with two points. A James Byrne goal put daylight between the sides and two more, one a tap in following a good save and the other from long range on twenty eight minutes, effectively ended the game. At the break Crokes led 3-7 to 0-3
The attendance had to wait until the forty first minute for scoring to resume in the form of a long high ball from Dara Burke ending in the net. Crokes added two more points before the home side found the net twice without reply. In the fifty sixth minute Jonathon Healy-Hayes, making his adult championship debut, splendidly finished to the net and two late points from Dara Burke, to bring his total on the night to 1-6 (1-3 from play), were the grace notes in a 5-11 to 2-3 win. Apart from the above mentioned Crokes got strong performance from Sean Garvey in goal, Donal Monnelly, Traolach O’Sullivan, who hit 1-1 and Joe Walsh.
Dublin South Juvenile Schools
Earlier in the day, the Dublin South Juvenile Schools team, with several Crokes representatives, had a narrow but impressive, 3-6 to 1-10, away win over Kilkenny CBS. The sides were level 2-3 to 1-6 at the break. The Kilkenny lads scored the first three points of the second half against the stiff breeze. They then packed their defence but were ultimately broken down by the Dublin boys.
Junior C’s beat Na Fianna
On Thursday (23rd April 2009) the Junior C3’s entertained Na Fianna in JHC5 at Silverpark. On a dull overcast evening and heavy pitch an outstanding defensive performance helped Crokes to a 1-5 to 0-2 win. It was 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of Crokes at the short whistle. To the fore for Crokes were Gavin Hyland, Paul Byrne, John Galvin and Padraig Doheny.
Team: D O’Donnaill, R Egan, G Hyland, P Byrne, H Liston, M Regan, J Galvin, P Doheny, S O’Keeffe, A Hudner, M Murphy, C McGrath, D O’Dwyer, B Gavigan, B Gallagher. Subs: B Halpin for M Murphy, D Brennan for B Gallagher.
St Benildus claim U14 Shield
During the afternoon St Benildus claimed the Dublin under 14 Shield with a nail biting two point (2-8 to 1-9) win over Ballyboden nursery, Naomh Eanna, against the backdrop of Roebuck Castle at Belfield. The victory owed much to the heroics of goalkeeper, Sean Smith and his defence while midfielder Eoin Murphy scored 1-7. Sean McCormack and Eamonn Allen impressed up front. Congratulations to all concerned.
Team: Sean Smith (Ballinteer), Sean Bedford (K Crokes), Mark Mannion (K Crokes), Ciaran Guihan (Ballyboden), Ronan Lewnis (unattached), Cian Gormley (K Crokes – Capt.), Ciaran McIntyre (K Crokes), Eoin Murphy (N Olafs), Eoin Coffey (N Olafs), Michael Mitchell (Ballinteer), Sean McCormack (N Olafs), Sean O’Brien (Ballinteer), Eamonn Allen (K Crokes), Daniel Coen (Ballinteer), Andrew Webster (N Olafs). Juvenile Action
Saturday afternoon had the two under 13 teams, the under 14’s and the under 16’s in action.
U13s
The under 13A’s ended 5-11 to 2-8 to the good against Ballyboden at Hermitage. The scoreline is somewhat deceptive in that for the first twenty minutes the game was nip and tuck. During this period, while the Crokes attack always looked threatening, several chances were put wide and even though Peter Herlihy hurled very well in the middle of the field the defensive sextet found it difficult to get to grips under pressure. The sound goalkeeping and good clearances of Tadgh Murphy helped to balance matters. Late unanswered scores gave the visitors a 3-6 to 1-4 lead.
Boden registered three unanswered points in the second instalment before a Ronan Keating pass set Shane Veale up for a point to steady the Crokes nerves on forty seven minutes and make it 3-8 to 1-7. Three minutes later Shane finished to the net and the game was effectively over. Boden did raise a green flag in the fifty fourth minute but this was cancelled by points from Eamonn Allen, Adam O’Neill and Shane Veale. For match report click HERE
Team: Tadgh Murphy, Mark McCallion, Ryan Murphy, Eoin Keane, Sean Crowe, Stephen Doyle, Daniel Coakley, Peter Herlihy, Tom Duke, Adam O’Neill, Eamonn Allen, Lorcan Tucker, Barney Sultan, Shane Veale, Michael Crowley. Subs: Des Dagg for M McCallion, Sean Keating for S Crowe, Eoin McMahon for D Coakley (all half time), Rona Kennedy for B Sultan (40 mins), M McCallion for M Crowley (58 mins)
The under 13B’s lost to Erins Isle in their Division 3 league game played in Deerpark. Crokes were 2-4 to 1-3 ahead at half time. In the second half Isles scored a goal and three points to Crokes single minor and won 2-7 to 2-5. Crokes best included Niall Sweeny, Matthew Redmond, Cian O’Connor and Ruairi Geraghty.
U14s
The under 14’s had to make the long journey to Bridgefield for their Division 1 clash with St Sylvesters A. A 3-9 to 1-6 win, following a tough game, was the outcome (half time 2-5 to 0-4). To the van for Crokes were goalkeeper Conor Hayes, Karl Doyle, Graham Healy-Hayes, Ronan Horgan, Cathal Keane-Breslin, Sean Bedford and Ryan Conlon. For report and photos of this match click HERE
Team: C Hayes, K Doyle, O O’Siochru, G Buckley, G Healy-Hayes, D O’Murchu, R Horgan, C MacGabhann, C Keane-Breslin, D O’Gallchobhair, S Bedford, D Mullen, R Conlon, D Keane, K O’Flanagain. Subs: M O’Dwyer for D O’Gallchobhair, D Paisley, C Egan, C McIntyre, A Lynch, B O’Sullivan, S Smith and A Spollen.
U16s
In Division 1 of the under 16 league Crokes lost 3-9 to 1-7 against Lucan Sarsfields in 12th Lock. A disappointing first half performance left too big a gap, 1-7 to 0-2, but there was much to praise in the second period fightback, led by Conall O’Neill, Emmet Doherty and Jamie Clinton.
Team: P Tighe, C O’Dwyer, S Boyd, J Clinton, O O’Carroll, E Doherty, S Moran, C Delaney, A Pilkington, F Motherway, D Corish, C O’Neill, J Cassidy, K Finn, K Kelly. Subs: A Cullinane for K Finn, J O’Brien for J Cassidy, N Hanley for C O’Dwyer, C Devins for F Motherway and Matthew Geraghty for D Corish.
Intermediates beat Round Towers
In the evening the intermediates played their second championship game against Round Towers. Down seven points, with forty minutes gone, a win seemed unlikely but the Kilmacud team showed considerable resolve to eke out a 2-16 to 3-10 win and garner their second brace of points. U15s v Na Fianna
On Sunday morning the under 15’s travelled to Johnstown Park to take on Na Fianna in League Division 1. On a good, if greasy pitch, Crokes drew first blood with a point. Na Fianna equalised and went a goal clear. Crokes reeled them in and led 3-1 to 1-2 at the break. With twelve minutes to go the Stillorgan lads were eleven clear. Na Fianna brought it back to six before a good point from the impressive Barry Horan settled it at 5-7 to 3-6. Stars included Mark Collins Conor J O’Dwyer, Louis O’Sullivan, James Murphy, Barry Horan and Oisin O’Rorke.
Squad: Caolan Conway, Conor J O’Dwyer Daibhid Corish, Mark Collins, Louis O’Sullivan, Conor O’Dwyer, James Murphy, Matthew Geraghty, Ross McGowan, Cian Gormley, Kevin James McGowan, Conor Devins, Neil Gorey, Barry Horan, Oisin O’Rorke, Matthew McNicholas, Conor O’Byrne, Tomas Barry, Andrew Colclough and Michael Herlihy.
Junior B’s beat Lucan Sarsfields
At home in Silverpark the Junior B’s entertained Lucan Sarsfields in the second round robin game of their championship. Although Lucan might have shaded it territorially, it was 2-4 to 0-6 in favour of Crokes at the break with Paddy Rath’s hard work accounting for one of the majors. The second half was every bit as dogged. In the end Crokes dug deeper and won 3-13 to 3-8 against strong opponents. Goalkeeper, Sean Garvey, was again impressive, as were Darren McVeigh at half back, midfielder Joe Walsh and Dara Burke and Paddy Rath up front.

Junior C’s v Rathcoole Commercials
In the second round robin JHC E2 championship game at Rathcoole Commercials proved too good for the Junior C3’s by 3-12 to 0-9. The first half was evenly contested with a Commercials twenty fifth minute goal being the main difference between the teams at half time, 1-5 to 0-4. In the second half, with the aid of a slight breeze, the Commercials forwards found their range. Once more the Kilmacud defensive unit played well with Brendan Halpin, Ronan Egan Deaglan O’Donnaill and Padraig Doheny worthy of special mention.
Team: N Canny, J Galvin, R Egan, B Halpin, D O’Donnaill, M Regan, H Liston, P Doheny (0-2), S O’Keeffe (0-6, f-5, 65-1), A Hudner, M Naughton (0-1), D O’Dwyer, B Gallagher, B Gavigan, F O’Connor.

Everybody will be familiar with the new Hurling Arena in Glenalbyn. This was built at a cost of €500,000 and is a huge addition to hurling in the club. It has been entirely funded by the Hurling Section and we still have some way to go.
We have also significantly upgraded and expanded our hurling coaching and our investment enables us to foster and promote the game to over 500 children at all ages. Last year as well as our senior hurlers reaching the county final, our under 14's won the Dublin Feile and competed well at the national finals while our other young teams traveled the length and breadth of Ireland, often returning with silverware, and always with a smile.
Our 2009 Punchestown offering is a real 'Recession Beater', at a reduced rate, and a better package than ever with:
· New course-side location with private lawn overlooking last fence
· Free Bus transfer to and from the event
· Four course lunch served to your table with complementary wine
· Race Cards for each guest and Professional tipsters to mark your card
There are three Grade 1 races including the feature race - the Kerrygold Champion Chase over 2 miles worth €200,000 which is expected to feature the very highly rated Cheltenham winner, Master Minded.
In 2008 we had a magnificent response, with over 1,000 people attending and we received incredibly positive feedback for what is now the social highlight of the year in the club.
We ask anyone in a position to do so to support our voluntary efforts and help us defray the financial burden. This can be done in several ways such as asking your company to take a table (better corporate entertainment value won't be had this year), by booking a table or seats yourself or with friends/fellow parents, by sourcing donations or spot
prizes. Booking forms can be downloaded from HERE

Quote from Parent
“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved. And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career! Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
