Lots of visitors to Kilmacud

The weekend was a busy one on the pitch with several visiting teams coming to Kilmacud to limber up before heading to the all-Ireland semi final in Croke Park. We also hosted the Buffers Alley senior hurlers for an early morning training session as part of their own bonding weekend in Dublin.

Minors

On Sunday morning (Aug 7th) the Crokes Minor Hurlers entertained Kilmacow who were on route to Croke Park. The match started with a quick lead taken by the home side with Justin Cassidy opening the scoring with a point from play and Cian Gormley quickly following with a rasper to the back of the net before the visitors got to grip and recovered with a couple of points to slow the home charge for a while. Justin followed with a point from a placed ball and Jamie Clinton, Rob Murphy and Andy Cullinane also registered on the score sheet to leave the sides 1-6 to 0-6 in favour of the hosts at the break. This was despite significant pressure on the goal which saw Eamon Allen stop a point blank shot in superb style.

The second half saw Barry Horan return from a long injury absence. Despite a quick spate of points from the visitors Conor Devins pointed to keep Crokes in the game but Kilmacow registered a purple patch which after a low range shot ended under the bar - left the visitors with a five point lead. However it didn't take long for Crokes to regain their composure and for Barry Horan to register his return in style with 3 goals from superb catches in short succession - these from deliveries from Ross McGowan, Jamie Clinton and Matthew Geraghty. He then tacked on another point which could easily have also rattled the net from a fine collection and delivery from the centre forward Cian Gormley.

The encounter ended with the home side prevailing on a score of 4-8 to 3-9 with everyone grateful to see Barry back in such fine form and to also welcome back Ross McGowan after a prolonged injury spell also.

U14
At the same time and venue U14 All-Ireland champions O'Loughlin Gaels proved that their recent impressive Feile win was no fluke when they comprehensively defeated our own Dublin Feile winners in Silver Park. Despite coming out the wrong end of a 3-16 to 1-8 scoreline there were several positives for the 'Crokes lads, not least a realisation that they need to step up physically to compete with the big guns at this age group. Darragh Butler and Mark O'Rourke led the way is this regard while Stevie O'Dwyer worked hard. Sean Gorman and Martin Connor showed that competing at this level is not beyond them.

U13

Immediately afterwards in Silver Park, the u13s hosted an very slick and hungry St Johns team from Belfast. The Antrim boys were dominant throughout and ran out comprehensive winners.
