Senior Hurling Challenge v Glenariffe

Body

A lovely sunny Saturday 24th March 2007 saw the Kilmacud Crokes senior hurlers play Glenariffe of Antrim in a challenge in Silverpark.  The visitors threw down the gauntlet with a goal in the first minute.  Three points from Fergal Armstrong (two frees, one from 75 metres) and Donal McGovern levelled matters by the sixth minute.  Glenariffe registered two minors before Ray Mangan’s well placed ball found Eoin Roche who ran and goaled in the eleventh minute.  Shortly after the same player, and then Donal McGovern, added a point each.

In the eighteenth minute Glenariffe pulled one back which was quickly cancelled by a Fergal Armstrong free and the same happened between the nineteenth and twenty first minutes.  Glenariffe raised another white flag a minute later which was matched by Donal McGovern in the twenty fourth minute after good work by James Burke.  Glenariffe got two more  points, one from a sideline, which were interspersed by a Fergal Armstrong free from thirty five metres before a James Burke point, following good work between Declan Browne and Armstrong, ended the first half scoring, 1-10 to 1-8 in favour of Crokes.

The Antrim men started the second half as the had the first and only a great save from MacDara O’hOgain kept the Crokes goal intact.  The ball was worked upfield to Tomas Donohue who sent over a good point.  That was the end of the scoring for the next ten minutes as Crokes registered four wides to Glenariffe’s one.  The umpires were called back into action when Declan Browne’s good ball found James Burke who pointed.  Glenariffe responded in kind immediately.

In the forty fourth minute a twenty five metre Glenariffe free found its way to the Crokes net.  They followed this with a point and another goal in the fifty second minute.  James Burke then steadied the Crokes ship with a good goal.  In the fifty sixth minute Fergal Armstrong pointed another free and in the fifty ninth minute Brian Motherway sent over to put Crokes one ahead.  From the puck out loose Crokes marking allowed Glenariffe to send over leaving the sides level 2-14 to 3-11 at the final whistle.

This was the senior’s second outing of the year.  Leading lights on the day included full back Dave Mahoney who made some excellent catches and clearances, Declan Browne, Fergal Armstrong, James Burke, Declan McGovern, Eoin Roche and Fergus Garvey, especially in the first half when he kept up a good supply to the inside forwards.
