Panel 1 v Faughs matches lose out to pitch closure

Overall summary

While the players, mentors and parents of Panel 1 suffered the disappointment of their match against Faughs GAA being cancelled due to pitch closure, Panel 2’s match with St Jude’ s went ahead on a wet and heavy but very playable pitch at Tymon Park.  Panel 2, supplemented on the day by a number of players from Panel 1 (with thanks to those lads and their parents for answering the call!), put in a strong display right across the panel to record a comfortable overall win.

The individual match reports are included below.  In reading these reports, please note some of the key u9 Go Games rules:

  • Each match lasts 40 minutes, with each half consisting of 10 minutes ground hurling followed by 10 minutes ‘air’ hurling (but no soloing permitted);
  • ‘Goals’ are worth 1 point, while ‘overs’ are worth 3 points;
  • There is an additional skill bonus point for a clean catch of a sliotar struck from distance.

PANEL 2 V ST JUDE’S (TYMON PARK)

OVERALL SCORE: ST JUDES 4-1-0 (7) V KC 2 13-1-0 (16)

Team 1: Sean O'Hurley, David Hyland, Oisin McCann, Sean Bradley, Joe Cullen, Thomas Doran, Luke O'Gorman, James Hamill, Fionn Boyd, Adam Fearon, Matthew Blanker

Score: St Jude’s 4-1-0 (7) v KC 4-0-0 (4)

A great energetic and skillfull display from Panel 1 saw the Crokes boys taking an early lead which they held well into the second half only to be overtaken in the final minutes by the St Judes lads. Some excellent lifting, striking and ground hurling was to be seen but there is plenty of work to be done especially in regards to tackling, attacking the ball at pace and recovering when the ball goes past you.

Team 2: Gavin Bane, Cian Browne, Eoin Kenny,  Louis McGaure, Lorc Martin, Dan Murphy, Keelan Murphy, Tomás Noone, Dylan Saunders and Cathal Sullivan

Score: St Jude’s 0-0-0 (0) v KC 3-0-0 (3)

On a wet and heavy pitch, the Crokes team dominated by virtue of their superior ground hurling skills, but the players also displayed the range skills that they have acquired, including some great lifting and striking and very determined and effective tackling.  There was a smattering of batting in the air, good ground blocking and a couple of very near misses in terms of bonus points for catching in the air. A couple of great efforts at ‘overs’ went just wide. Our 4 goalkeepers’ puck outs were great and kept the St Judes’ defence under pressure for the duration.

All the Crokes’ goals came in the first half, a half that they dominated.  St Judes played better in the second half, which was more of a contest, but the Crokes team’s ability on the ground and willingness to tackle meant that they remained on top.  There were a couple of near misses to extend the lead in the second half, though St Judes had a couple of chances from 65’s, and if either of those had gone over they would have sneaked a draw!

Overall a fine result and one of the most pleasing aspects is that each and every member of the team contributed across the pitch, with blocking and tackling which is equally as important as scoring to the final outcome of a match.

Mentors:  Cormac Browne, Simon Murphy, Declan Saunders, Mark Kenny

Team 3: 1Dylan Arundel, Joe Broderick, Andrew Dillon, Scott Galvin, Aaron Golden, Matthew Kane, Jamie O'Shea ,David Ryan, Daire Sullivan and Tom Walsh

Score: St Jude’s 0-0-0 v KC 6-1-0 (9)

On what could only be best described as a soft and heavy pitch, Team 3 put in a strong performance versus their St Judes counterparts. The elements and the pitch contrived to make it a tough day for free flowing hurling but the Kilmacud team made the best of the conditions. A strong opening half with the assistance of the hill meant that Kilmacud finished the first half of the match with a score of 3-0 to 0-0. It was more of the same with the second half where the pressure yielded another 3-1. There were fine displays across the team with excellent support play, tough defending and great clearances. Even in the dying minutes of the match our lads were continuing to fight for the sliotar and exert pressure on the opposition.
