Match Report/ Match Highlights:

Under 16 Hurlers – Emphatic victory over Erins Isle

Tuesday the 31st of July was a smashing day, the hope that summer weather was on the way high in everyone’s mind, everyone except the Crokes Under 16 hurlers that is. Erins Isle traveled over to Silverpark to fulfill a back fixture and try to get their season back on track, having had a surprising poor start to their campaign. This was the first match for the lads since the Carlow tournament over three weeks ago.

A slow start by Crokes, but the scoring started in the 7th minute when Seanie popped over a great point followed five minutes later by a converted 65’ by Darren. Despite having most of the procession, Crokes were complicating things in front of goal and had to wait until the 21st minute for Mark Lynsky to score a goal from a long range lob. Jude Sweeney added a point two minutes later to cancel out a good point from Erins Isle. Brendan Halpin then added another goal three minutes before the end of the half. Crokes went into the break with a commanding 2-03 to 0-01 lead. While the forwards were a bit scrappy in front of goal, the backs were playing very well and had smothered any threats from the Erins Isle forwards.

In the second half, Crokes started brightly and added 2 goals and four points in the opening ten minutes. Darren popped over another 65’, Jude scored a goal and a marvelous point, Seanie also added a goal and a point to his tally, both excellent scores after some good hard work and Killian popped over his only point of the day after a run from midfield. With the game seemingly in the bag, Crokes went to sleep, lost their shape and allowed Erins Isle to take control for the next ten minutes when they scored five unanswered points. However, Crokes picked up their game and the last ten minutes became the Barry & Darren show. Barry had moved out of goals with 15 minutes of play remaining and Seanie went in between the posts. Barry went on a scoring spree, knocking over 5 points including one converted free and Darren converted another 65’ and a long range free. When the referee blew his whistle, Crokes had a healthy 4-14 to 0-06 lead.

Overall a good performance, especially given the number of players missing due to holidays and injury. The next official outing is an away league game to Naomh Fionnbarra in two weeks time. The intensity at training will have to increase as the first Championship outing against Ballyboden St Endas draws nearer.
