Week Ending 28th June 2009

Body

At a balmy Silverpark on Saturday evening 27th June 2009 the Kilmacud Crokes senior hurlers made it three unbeaten AHL1 games in a row when taking both points from Ballyboden’s B team.

The Firhouse Road men got on the scoreboard with a point before Fergal Armstrong goaled.  Boden doubled their score and then Peter Clinton made it 1-1 to 0-2.  In the sixteenth minute it was 1-1 to 0-3.  Three minutes later Fergal Armstrong sent over a free and there were two between the sides again.  At this stage the home team was on top but a combination of balls dropping short and misses prevented outfield superiority troubling the flagmen.  In the twenty third minute Rob O’Loughlin, at the end of a three man combination, also involving Shane O’Rorke and Conor Clinton, split the posts to give his side a three point lead.  In the remainder of the half each side registered two overs – 1-5 to 0-5 at the turn.

Good support play allowed Shea Gillen tap over from 20 metres within sixty seconds of the restart.  In the thirty seventh minute a Ballyboden goal left the minimum separating the teams.  A controversial decision to award a 65 had the sides level in the fortieth minute.  By now the visitors’ half back line was dominant.  The move of Kevin O’Loughlin helped reverse the trend and on the three quarter mark the same player sent a poacher’s goal to the net.  Within a minute Boden replied in kind and a player from each side had been dismissed.  Shane O’Rorke restored the Crokes advantage.

With seven minutes left the game was level for the third time.  Crokes were back in front thanks to a Kevin O’Loughlin free two minutes later.  Boden replied similarly.  As the final curtain was about to fall Barra O’Leidhin’s persistence drew a free which Kevin O’Loughlin converted to secure a 2-9 to 2-8 win.  To the fore for the winners were full back Niall Lillis, Damien Byrne, Aodhan de Paor, Fergal Armstrong and Kevin O’Loughlin.

Team:

E Dalton, N Mulligan, N Lillis, G McMorrow, D Byrne, A de Paor, R O’Loughlin (0-1), A Cleary, S Gillen (0-1), R Walsh, C Clinton, S O’Rorke (0-1), P Clinton (0-1), F Armstrong (1-2, f-2), K O’Loughlin (1-3, f-2).  Subs: W Ryan for D Byrne (46 mins inj), B O’Leidhin for P Clinton (55 mins), R Sweetnam and B O’Rorke.

The week opened brightly when on Monday the minors defeated Whitehall Colmcilles by 4-20 to 1-6 in a league Division 1 tie at Cloughran.  Crokes took command at an early stage and the issue was never in doubt.  For report see http://kilmacudcrokes-hurling.com/Home/tabid/7975/ctl/Details/mid/11061/ItemID/1155/Default.aspx

Splendid sunshine was very conducive to making a great success of the 2009 Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Golf Classic on Thursday 25th June 2009.  Held in the scenic Bray Golf Club, competition was hectic before the all Wexford ESB Customer Supply team of Pat Fenlon, Martin Byrne, Paul Nolan and Joe O’Mahoney took the laurels with a single point (93) to spare over Brian Murphy’s team, securing their fifth top five finish in as many years.  The event raised badly needed funs for hurling in the club and our thanks to all who took teams, provided sponsorship or who supported in any way.  We also record our thanks to the hard working group who made such a success of the event.  For report see http://kilmacudcrokes-hurling.com/Home/GolfClassic/tabid/8253/Default.aspx.  For those home early, the day was rounded off with a 3-20 to 4-7 win for the Junior B’s over O’Dwyers in the Doyle Cup in Silverpark

Friday evening provided a double header in Silverpark.  The minors lost their Division 1 clash with Naomh Fionnbarra by six points while the intermediates went down in AHL4 to Lucan Sarsfields, 0-11 to 0-9.

On Saturday the under 13’s took part in the annual PJ Troy Tournament at Ellenfield (Whitehall Colmcilles).  A 4-2 to 0-1 victory in the first round group game against Clontarf was followed by a 2-3 to 2-0 loss in the second group game.  This put Crokes into the runners up group where they recorded victories over Na Fianna (3-3 to 1-6) after a very committed display and Ballyboden by 4-8 to 0-1.

The under 12’s made the longer journey to Cork for the Na Piarsaigh Tournament.  First up were Na Piarsaigh who prevailed by eight points.  A similar margin saw Charleville home in the second game.  The third game against Carbery Rangers resulted in a victory for Crokes.  Having overnighted in An Stor Hostel in Midleton the Crokes lads had a challenge against Na Piarsaigh on Sunday morning before heading back to Dublin.

While older juvenile teams were on the road, Glenalbyn resounded to early morning sound of the separate under 6 and under 7 blitzes where fun for all was much evident

Parental Assistance

We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Quote from Parent

“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved.  And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career!  Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
