Victory for U12s in Belfast!
Siberian conditions greeted the u12 boys as they headed North on Saturday Feb. 1st for the inaugural 'Slasher' McDaid trophy in St. Marys CBS in Belfast.
With gale force winds and driving rain we had the odd case of hypothermia after the initial games against O'Donovan Rossa and Keady!!. The lads soon warmed up thanks to the hot tea and soup provided by our gracious hosts. The boys then overcame a good Faughs team and the local St Marys team awaited them in the final, and what a final it was!
The rain turned to hailstones as the light disappeared (someone turn on the floodlights ? - it was only 2pm!!). The final was a ding-dong battle with Crokes getting a couple of early scores, St Marys fought back to level it with some fine skill from their 'giant' midfielder. The Dubs were not to be out done and raised their game another notch in the second half. There was some heroic defending by the Crokes boys as St Marys piled on the pressure but couldn't get that elusive score. The performance of the Kilmacud boys in those horrendous conditions was monumental and will certainly be long remembered in their sporting careers. Both the boys and Parents on the line were all soaked to the skin at the end but the elation at the final whistle made it all worthwhile!!
Many thanks to St Marys CBS for their great hospitality (the soup and rolls were never more welcomed!).
