Week Ending 15th July 2007

After the recent spate of hectic activity this was a quiet week on the playing front.

Early Saturday morning the under 11’s travelled to Ballyragget for the home club’s annual tournament.  This involved 17 Kilkenny clubs and Kilmacud Crokes.  The draw pitted Crokes against one of the stronger Kilkenny teams, Clara.  After a very competitive game, with Clara getting a goal right at the death, the travellers came out the wrong side of a 6-6 to 5-3 scoreline.  Best for Crokes were Ryan Murphy, Conor Gowing and Tadgh Murphy in goal

On Saturday afternoon Dublin lost to Offaly, 2-25 to 2-13, in a dead rubber in the All-Ireland qualifier series in Tullamore.  With an eye to next Wednesday night’s Leinster under 21 final between the same teams in Parnell Park both counties rested their eligible players.  We extend our best wishes to our own Ross O’Carroll in the Leinster Final.

In Silverpark on Sunday morning Crokes entertained Ballyboden St Endas in the Summer Minor Hurling League.  A competitive first half ended with Crokes 1-6 to 0-7 ahead.  For much of the second half the game was still a contest with Crokes finding it difficult to pull away.  However a late Cathal Thornton goal sealed the issue.  For Crokes Ken Noctor at right half back was superb throughout as was Eoin McGowan with 1-4 in the first half before being rested.  Also to the fore, on an occasion when all panel members got game time, were Alan McPhilips, Shane McNicholas, Conor Caulfield, Killian Motherway and Chris Carolan.

Team:

Cathal Thornton, Cillian Caffrey, Paddy Igoe, Alan McPhilips, Ken Noctor, Donal McEvoy, Chris Carolan, Karl Dias, Conor Caulfield, Killian Motherway, Chris Cunningham, Oran Turley, Eoin O’Sullivan, Eoin McGowan, Fergus Hanley.  Subs: Eoin Culligan, Mark Coughlan, Ronan Walsh, Shane McNicholas, Niall Mulligan, Niall Butler and Ciaran O’Grady.

From a historical perspective it is interesting to now how both clubs have progressed to become consistent forces in Dublin underage hurling from the point, in 1971, when they combined to enter as Na Piarsaigh in Dublin minor competition.

While the first round of the senior hurling championship scheduled for 21st June 2007 has been postponed the coming week promises plenty of action including the games listed below.  As always, be sure to confirm with relevant mentors in case of late changes.
