Match Report / Match Highlights:
St Sylvesters travelled for a match at 12.30 pm in Pairc De Burca a bright, dry day but a stiff enough wind blowing into one end.
A Splendid victory over St Sylvesters. It was great to get a good start to the 2008 season. St Sylvesters were coming up from Division 2 last year and accordingly found it tough going.
In the first half we played with the wind and managed to dominate, keeping the play largely within the St Sylvesters half. After Crokes registered a few points we managed to contain the puckouts and drive the ball back in to our forwards. St Sylvesters rarely broke through our defence in the first half and only managed one point, from a free.
In defence Keith Finn showed tenacity when called upon but our backs had little to do during this period. Alex Pilkington and John Huban kept control of midfiels, where two of the St Sylvesters best players operated.
Emmet Doherty dominated the centre, Barry O'Farrell put in a great battling display, contesting every ball in his area and Crokes led 1-10 to 0-1 at the interval.
St Sylvesters, with the wind behind them, made more inroads in the 2nd half and to their credit kept plugging away with a few extra points and another goal. While St Sylvesters made great efforts to get back in the game, our backs fought hard to repel any attacks. We relaxed too much however and let in an easy goal. We continued to push forward to notch up a few more scores and Niall Hanley was unfortunate to have a good effort blocked.
This was a very clean game and a credit to both sets of players.
