Dublin and Wexford draw
Brinksmanship of a singular order probably best defines Dublin’s 0-19 to 2-13 Leinster Championship semi-final draw with Wexford in Nowlan Park on Saturday afternoon, 14th June 2008. Having recovered from the shock of two early goals the Dubs outclassed the Model county men for the rest of the first half but somehow managed to lead by only four points at half time, 0-11 to 2-1.
Wexford provided tougher opposition in the second half but the Sky Blues still had the upper hand and with a bit more composure might have won comfortably. In the event it took a mishit Wexford free in the last minute to save the game. Both teams will probably benefit from the replay and the tie is certainly there for Dublin if they build on the many positives from the first encounter.
For the first time three Crokes men started for Dublin in the Leinster Senior Championship– Gerry Hogarty and Niall Howard started in 1987 and Justin Roberts was a substitute. Niall Corcoran confined Wexford’s most dangerous forward, Rory Jacob to just two points and made some great clearances. James Burke scored a well taken point and was unlucky to see his first half screamer go just the wrong side of the post. Ross O’Carroll, with five points to his credit, constantly took the game to Wexford and was most impressive in the several forward positions in which he featured. For report HERE
Under 13’s reach final of Na Piarsaigh tournament
While all this was going on the Under 13’s played three games in the Na Piarsaigh tournament in Cork. Victories in their first two games against the hosts and St Finbarrs ensured qualification for the final on Sunday against their conquerors in the third round robin game, O’Donovan Rossa from Belfast. The final on Sunday was decided by a free in the last minute that O’Donovan Rossa pointed. This was a fantastic effort by a superb squad and many successful days lie ahead. Congratulations to all involved players, families, supporters and management and our thanks yet again to our wonderful hosts. For images of the games played click HERE or on the flashing camera below
More under age action!
En route to the Nowlan Park match the under 10’s brought two teams to Kilkenny. One team competed in the O’Loughlin Gaels tournament and the other played two games in Castlecomer, winning one and losing one. In the O’Loughlins tournament Crokes beat Dicksboro and Clara and went down to the hosts and Gorey.
Back in Dublin there was plenty of underage action. The under 12A team had a thrilling Cup semi-final 4-9 to 2-11 win away to unbeaten Whitehall Comcilles. Shane Veale and Eamonn Allen were scorers-in-chief. The B’s were in their game against Lucan for most of the encounter but a late flurry put a somewhat false look on the scoreline. The C’s with Fionn Donnelly, Paul Comerford, Cian Fahey and Hubert Barry (with a goal and a superb point to his credit as well as several “assists”) to the fore lost by the last puck of the game, 4-5 to 5-3, to O’Dwyers in Deerpark after a titanic struggle.
The two under 11 squads (two eleven a side teams per squad) played each other in well contested Cup semi-final games at Deerpark with the Paul Gorman, Dermot Connor and Colm Maher managed outfit progressing.
Under Go Games rules one of the under 9 squads overcame Raheny, 36-6 while the two under 8 squads won their games with Naomh Barrog (25-7) and Lucan (19-5).
More adult team action
On Tuesday the senior hurlers played Ballyboden “A” in the league but were unable to reprise their win over Boden’s “B” side the previous week, going down 3-14 to 1-9. Despite the first half wind advantage Crokes went in five points behind having failed to convert any of a number of goal chances while the visitors took their three chances.
The Kilmacud team ran up an early goal and point on the resumption and were back in the game. A disallowed goal and penalty save stalled the momentum. Midway through the half Boden strung together two points to restore the five point lead. The hosts could not claw the gap back and a run of late points by the visitors put the issue beyond doubt. Best for Crokes were Willie Ryan, Adrian Grogan, Neil Casey and Eoin Fitzgerald
Team:
MacDara O’hOgain, Willie Ryan, Dave Mahony, Ray Mangan, Aodhan de Paor, Daibhi de Paor, Damien Byrne, Adrian Grogan, Shane O’Rorke (0-1), Brian Motherway (0-1), Hugh Gannon, Neil Casey (0-1), Barry O’Rorke (0-1), Eoin Fitzgerald (1-4, f-4), Niall Butler. Subs: Donal McGovern (0-1) for N Butler, Shea Gillen, Fergus Garvey, Eoin de Paor
At the same venue and time the Junior C3’s played Erin Go Breagh in a Division 8 league tie and won 0-14 to 1-9 while the under 14’s overcame Emeralds in a challenge in Urlingford.
The minors had two fixtures in the Summer league. On Wednesday they hosted Na Fianna in Silverpark, going down by three points. In the same competition Sunday saw them travel to Marino to play St Vincents and going down by nine points after a fighting display.
