Minors overcome Na Fianna

A late switch saw the Sunday morning (5th October) minor A round robin championship game with Na Fianna moved from Moibhi Road to the nearby DCU Sports Complex with its pitch in splendid condition.  By the fourteenth minute Crokes had posted five points to no reply and were dominant.  They then seemed to lose their authority and allowed the game drift from them.  By the twenty eight minute Na Fianna had registered two points and it might have been more but for a number of wides.  A Kevin O’Loughlin goal direct from a 70 metre free gave the Kilmacud side a 1-5 to 0-2 cushion at the interval, the other Na Fianna point coming just before the short whistle.

Na Fianna scored three points without reply in the first ten minutes of the second half.  Again it might have been more but for wides.  In the forty seventh minute Darren McVeigh pulled over the bar to put three between the teams.  Seven minutes later he repeated the trick and a Sean McGrath converted free in the final minute made the final score 1-8 to 0-6.

Goalkeeper Barry Mulligan and the full back trio of Killian Doherty, Bill O’Carroll and Andrew Whelan dealt capably with everything that came their way.  Niall Mulligan, Donal Monnelly and Gary McMorrow in the half back line were also to the fore.  With four points from two games Crokes now face Naomh Fionnbarra in the final round robin game.

Team: B Mulligan, K Doherty, B O’Carroll, A Whelan, D Monnelly, G McMorrow, N Mulligan, E O’Byrne, M Coughlan, E Culligan, D McVeigh, B O’Leidhin, S McGrath, K O’Loughlin, J Doughan.  Subs: A Carr for J Doughan (43 mins), M O’Dwyer for D McVeigh (54 mins), K Hogarty, S  Murphy, P Collins, C Caulfield, E Dalton, C O’Brien and C Cunningham.

Under 11 Tournament

Back in Glenalbyn the under 11’s hosted a very high quality eight team A and four team B tournament.  The A’s emerged from their group with wins over Naomh Eanna, Gorey, and Oranmore Maree and a loss to James Stephens.  In the semi final they came up against old rivals Na Fianna and lost out to a last minute goal.  In the final James Stephens narrowly overcame Na Fianna.  In the B competition Crokes were pipped by two points in the final by Na Piarsaigh of Cork.  Well done to the organisers for a splendidly run event and to all the helpers who assisted.  For report see link?

U15s lose Champiohsip Final to Castleknock

On Sunday afternoon the under 15’s came up against 2007 national Feile na nGael Champions, Castleknock, at the top of their form in the county final at St Peregrines grounds in Mulhuddart.  The concession of an early point and goal was ominous.  Crokes held the opposition scoreless for the rest of the first quarter before a stream of points saw Castleknock pull away.  The second half was more of the same and ended 6-14 to 1-2.  For Crokes Cian Delaney, on Castleknock’s star forward, Ciaran Kilkenny, Oisin O’Rorke on limited possession, and Justin Cassidy tried hardest.  While the victors were superb the scoreline was not a true reflection on the Crokes effort.  It was a great achievement to contest the final and our thanks to all involved, the players, parents and management team of Liam O’Carroll, David Moran and Donie Dowling who put in a huge effort all year.

Team: P Tighe, C O’Dwyer, S Boyd, C O’Neill, O O’Carroll, E Doherty, R Murphy, A Pilkington (1-1, frees), C Delaney, K Finn, J Cassidy (0-1, f), N Carr, O O’Rorke, F Motherway,  R McGowan.  Subs: J Clinton for K Finn, J Huban for F Motherway, S Moran for C O’Neill, KJ McGowan for N Carr, J O’Brien for O O’Carroll, K Kelly, N Hanley

U13s beat Ballyboden in Semi Final

Juvenile action on Saturday took teams to all parts of Dublin.  Highlight was the under 13’s two point championship semi-final victory over Ballyboden St Endas at Deerpark.  This was a hard fought game.  The sides were level after fifteen minutes, Boden led by one at half time and, notwithstanding second half wind advantage, Crokes were six points in arrears with a quarter of an hour to go.  A late scoring flurry saw the Kilmacud boys lead by two points as the game entered its dying stages but it was only thanks to resolute defending they prevailed.  Leading lights included Michael O’Dwyer, Ronan Horgan, Odhran O’Siochru, Donnchadh O’Murchu, Cian MacGabhann, Dara Mullin and substitutes Donal Keane and Graham Healy-Hayes.

Team: Cian MacGabhann, Conor Hayes, Odhran O’Siochru, Gregory Buckley, Donnchadh O’Murchu, David Kane, Ronan Horgan, Stephen Faughey, Mark O’Loughlin, Dara O’Gallchobhair, Ciaran McIntyre, Cathal Keane-Breslin, Dara  Mullin, Michael O’Dwyer, Kevin O’Flanagain.  Subs: Donal Keane for K O’Flanagain, Graham Healy-Hayes for C Keane-Breslin, Sean Bedford, Adam Spollen and Edward Campion

U16s lose out to Ballyboden in Semi Final

The under 16’s were also in championship action against the Firhouse Road men but had to bend the knee to a better team by a 3-15 to 0-7.  Best for Crokes were Sean Garvey, Louis Whelan, Fiachra Lynn and Jonathon Healy-Hayes.  If this was a slightly downbeat end to the championship campaign it was still a year with a number of high points such as the Ballygalget Tournament win and a fine effort in the Carlow Tournament.  Our thanks to all who contributed during the year especially the players, families and the management team of Martin O’Dwyer, Tom Curran and Peter Walsh.

Team: Sean Garvey, Stephen Beale, Fiachra Lynn, Gary Melican, Darren Lawlor, James O’Keeffe, Louis Whelan, Dillon Mulligan, Mark O’Dwyer, Enda Grogan, Eoghan O’Dwyer, Karl Russell, Nico Salvino, Jonathon Healy-Hayes, Kevin Murphy.  Subs: Thomas Clarke for K Murphy, Oisin O’Gallchobhair for E Grogan, Niall Murphy for G Melican and Brian McHenry for S Beale.

U14s beat Whitehall Colmcilles in League

Elsewhere it was league action.  The under 14’s were in Ellenfield to play Whitehall Colmcilles.  Against the breeze, following a diffident performance, Crokes trailed by a point at half time, 2-5 to 1-7.  An improved second half display, with a greater eagerness to win possession evident, secured a 4-16 to 2-6 victory.  Goalkeeper Caolan Conway was impressive throughout while the backs, led by James Murphy, with two fine points, Andrew Coclough and Mark Collins performed assuredly.  Further out Ross McGowan, Matthew Geraghty, Matthew McNicholas and Conor O’Byrne were most prominent.

Squad: C Conway, P O’Shea, D Corish, A Coclough, M Collins, C O’Dwyer, J Murphy (0-2), R McGowan (0-5, f-5), C Devins (0-1), C Gormley (0-1), M Geraghty, M McNicholas (1-2), C O’Byrne (2-3), B Horan (1-0), N Gorey (0-1), O O’Rorke (0-1, f-1)

Good results for U12s squads

The under 12A’s beat Cuala by 3-8 to 3-2 away with impressive performances from Ryan Murphy, Michael Crowley, Peter Herlihy, Sean Crowe and Conor Gowing,.  The under 12B’s had a free Saturday while the C’s travelled to Balheary and came away with the points on a 4-3 to 0-2 scoreline.  This was a game that was well contested for the first quarter.  Thereafter Crokes pulled away.  Among the stars were Cillian O’Shea, Matthew Redmond, Andrew Liffey, Niall Sweeny, Cian Montague and Colin Smyth, whose second half flicked goal was sublime.

Squad: Paul Comerford (0-1), Fionn Donnelly, Craig Lawlor, E Keane, Cian Montague, Sean O’Hurley, Cillian O’Shea (0-1), Ruairi Geraghty (0-1), Matthew Redmond, Andrew Liffey, Niall Sweeny, Cian Fahey, Shane Vallom (2-0), Colin Smyth (1-0), John Egan (1-0), Hubert Barry.

U10’s, U9’s and U8’s action

The under 10’s beat Naomh Olafs by 4-4 to 0-4 while the under 9’s went down, 57 to 36 (competition scoring rules) to Na Fianna.  The under 8 teams came out on top in a blitz at Oatlands accounting for St Judes, Crumlin and Lucan Sarsfields.

Parental Assistance

We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Quote from Parent

“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved.  And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career!  Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
